ARGH DANDRUFF

Well, I think that’s what it is. What works? Please?? I was just heading into work, took a proper look in the mirror (washed my hair this morning with E45 shampoo) and it was literally disgusting. On the front top of the hairline and a big patch of scalp behind.

The thing is, the dry skin is also on my forehead, albeit not in the big flaky patches that are coming off my scalp. Horrible, so embarrassing, I’m just glad I checked before seeing other human beings.

Any advice from anyone? What works? At my wit’s end. I also appear to have hair loss in the same area.

When my dh was suffering with dandruff he used TGel initially then tge Bodyshop Ginger shampoo.

Because of the skin issue on your forehead, would it be worth trying a baby cradle cap shampoo? My dd used Bee Nature honey mousse shampoo on my dgd.

You could try ketoconazole shampoo (Nizoral is a brand name). I had the same symptoms, including a fetching prickly heat-alike rash on my back and torso, the dermatologist said it was seborrheic dermatitis and to use that. It worked and I just do a periodic hair/body wash with it a couple of times a month now to keep it at bay.

Nizoral

Right, I’ll buy some on the way home.

Consider going to the GP. "Dandruff" can be many things (eg. Psoriasis), and if it's severe or persistent you need to know what it is to get the treatment right.

Agree with Nizoral, worked on my persistent crusty scalp, I tried everything before this really cleared it up

Tried it last night, will see if it has helped… I agree psoriasis is also a possibility, so will be keeping an eye. Thanks!

Selsun anti dandruff shampoo cleared mine up completely even my hair dresser was shocked. You can buy it on amazon xx

WhatAMessAgain123 · 06/03/2024 07:12

The only thing that has worked for me is a shampoo containing selenium sulphide. Quite rare to find in supermarkets (no idea why) so I get Sulsena from Amazon for about £8.

The Nizoral has already helped a lot around the hairline, but will need another wash for the area further back. Thanks for the suggestions - will bear in mind if this doesn’t clear it in the expected 4 weeks.

I have this exact problem currently, you have my sympathy. I started using Nizoral a week ago and it's so much better. I've been using Zerobase on my forehead, which is helping. As others have said, it sounds very much like it could be seborrheic dermatitis.
I was diagnosed with this when I was 15 and I'm now 46, so I suspect it's hormone related since it disappeared with treatment until now, 30 years later... Eczema on my hands has also reappeared after being fairly dormant during this time. Boots had a brilliant own brand daily shampoo and treatmant balm called Dry Scalp, which kept it under control and didn't wreck my hair, it's a shame they no longer do things such as this.
Anyway, I've bought Eucerin DermoCapillaire Calming Urea shampoo to use on days when I'm not using Nizoral and Bioderma Sensibio DS+ Soothing Purifying Cream for my forehead - they've only arrived today so I've yet to use them.

Used for the third time now and everything is looking much better. Just need to hope I manage to maintain it once I’m through the main treatment, and it doesn’t come back!
