Your post is totally understandable, so if someone can't, then that's on them.
On to your real question.
I have drunk more than the recommended amount for well over 20 years and am still physically healthy and fitter than average for my age. I am not recommending this behaviour but, it is my situation.
Most of my family also drink above recommended limits with no apparent affects on health. Some people I know, have far worse effects from drinking a much lower amount.
Government recommendations are based on average. Some people will drink far more and be fine, others will drink far less and be badly affected.
I strongly suspect there is a strong genetic link to how well your body copes with the poison that is alcohol and whether you become adicted or not.
Only you can decide for yourself what your situation is.
For me, my belief is that I am psychologically addicted to alcohol (self medication) but I do know I am not physically addicted. I can (and do) do dry January etc but I am not remotely interested in abstaining altogether. I get regular liver function tests, blood pressure and other blood tests and all fall well within healthy limits.
If you are worried, stop or cut down. The liver is a brilliant organ and will definitely regenerate from any damage done so far
