Since Covid I have enjoyed alcohol more than I should meaning I probably drink to much barcardi but I love it …love a few each night then at the weekend maybe a big bottle a week to 10 days I done dry January no problem and haven’t drunk much since then as I’m 57 and I’m thinking about my health I do miss it but I haven’t go the shakes or anything and I have the willpower to cut down but I’m worried about any damage I may have already done …anyone else drink a lot since Covid

I think the fact it's bothering you shows there's a bit of a problem there.

Well done for cutting down. It's the right thing to do for your health.

Your post is one massive sentence with no full stops.

It's difficult to read.

Your post is totally understandable, so if someone can't, then that's on them.

On to your real question.
I have drunk more than the recommended amount for well over 20 years and am still physically healthy and fitter than average for my age. I am not recommending this behaviour but, it is my situation.

Most of my family also drink above recommended limits with no apparent affects on health. Some people I know, have far worse effects from drinking a much lower amount.

Government recommendations are based on average. Some people will drink far more and be fine, others will drink far less and be badly affected.

I strongly suspect there is a strong genetic link to how well your body copes with the poison that is alcohol and whether you become adicted or not.

Only you can decide for yourself what your situation is.

For me, my belief is that I am psychologically addicted to alcohol (self medication) but I do know I am not physically addicted. I can (and do) do dry January etc but I am not remotely interested in abstaining altogether. I get regular liver function tests, blood pressure and other blood tests and all fall well within healthy limits.

If you are worried, stop or cut down. The liver is a brilliant organ and will definitely regenerate from any damage done so far

I understood you perfectly, perhaps you don't speak 'shithead' though?

I get quoted about my typing all the time i think it's teachers that have had a bad day and hit the wine.

Maybe you could talk to your Gp only you know if it's too much.
