DVLA and log book nightmare can anyone help

Bought a car in December through a trader who had excellent reviews and good feedback. It came with 3 months tax.

The logbook didnt arrive.

Checked regularly on line to make sure it was still taxed and it was.

There was a slight mechanical issue with it that we noticed after having it a week, but no biggie and DP is a mechanic at one of the nationwide companies, so he called them up, spoke to them, they agreed to send out the part and he would fix it himself, and he also asked about the log book as it didnt come with the vehicle when it was delivered. (We have all the other paperwork proving we have paid etc), and they said it would be in the post straight away.

A week later, called them as neither part or log book had arrived. Phone message saying the company had gone into liquidation.

So its now March and we have no logbook, and no tax so the vehicle is SORN and I cant work without a car.

I have sent off the V62 for to register as the new keeper to get a log book but when I spoke to the DVLA today they said it will take 4 to 6 weeks for this to be sent to me and in the meantime the car cant go on the road.

Does anyone here work for the DVLA or know if theres any way I can sort this out quicker. I dont mind driving from Devon to Swansea if it means I can get it sorted out. Im stuck and having no car for a month will seriously impact my work and I cant bloody afford to hire or buy a new car either.

Arghhhhhhhhh.

You used to be able to tax a car without the logbook at the Post Office by using a certain form. Not sure if you can still do this? Might be worth checking at your local main post office.

You may have to follow this up with DVLA as it doesn’t sound quite right to me.
It doesn’t sound like the garage ever had the log book in the first place. When you are sold a car they should fill in a small section of the log book, the new keeper section and give it to you. This proves you own the car until you receive the new log book. In order to receive the new log book, they must send in the old one with details of the sale on it.
Also, second hand cars no longer come with road tax, any current road tax is automatically refunded to the seller at point of sale and you have to tax it at point of sale. It’s not transferable.
I’m wondering whether the DVLA will first have to contact the previous owner to check whether they still own it as you can’t prove you legally own it as you have no new keepers slip. Payment receipts are not proof of ownership.
Maybe worth asking for an AA inspection or friendly Police officer to check it’s all ok.

We had an issue with the garage not sending it off so we used the green stub to order a new one. Months later the garage got their act together and DVLA issued another V5, at which point we had sold the vehicle and starting getting parking fines for hundreds of miles away!

I wrote to them with proof of sale and it was solved fairly quickly. I don’t recall tax being an issue though (about the only thing that wasn’t!)

If you take in the V62 to a post office then you may be able to tax it.
I know you’ve sent yours off so maybe cancel that one with the DVLA and do another? Give them a ring and get their best advice
