GP won’t book in babies jabs, is this allowed??

Sorry I probably could google this but I’m just unsure of the advice I’ve just been given and want opinions.

DS is turning one this week and is due his one year jabs. The receptionist at the GP said that the nurse is fully booked up until April, meaning he won’t get his one year jabs for another 4+ weeks. Is it ok to go this far over?

Yes, it's fine. There are all kinds of reasons you could be delayed. Illness, being on holiday. The efficacy isn't affected by you being a couple of weeks later than suggested.

Yes, better late than never. Jabs are quite often late as kids are sick etc. Maybe see if there's a cancellation list?

There's just a queue, that's very normal I think. It's not that they won't book them in, it's that they can't until April.

It's absolutely fine. Actually, I think they often do them around 13 months as the reminder goes out around 12 months, and then yes, they will be booked up for several weeks. It's perfectly fine and normal.

Tittyfilarious · 04/03/2024 13:24

It's fine don't worry 🙂

MummySam2017 · 04/03/2024 13:24

Yeah it’s fine, my DD was ill when hers were due so we had to delay a few weeks and was all good.

HiCandles · 04/03/2024 13:24

The jabs should be given between 12 and 13 months so if the date given is within that they're acting within the guidelines. It sounds like that's probably the case for your DS from you saying he's one next week.
If not- I would ask to speak to the practice manager about this. I wouldn't be at all happy about delaying MMR at the moment given the current high rate of measles cases, which is one of the 1 year jabs. In my view they should be offering extra clinics to deal with the backlog.
I am a GP by the way.

rainbowunicorn · 04/03/2024 13:25

He doesn't need the jabs the minute he turns 1. The reminder usually goes out a short while before they turn 1 and the actual tabs are usually within about 6 weeks.

WelshNerd · 04/03/2024 13:26

Yes, it'll be ok. I had similar issues with my daughter's pre school jabs which were a couple of months late due to staff shortages.

Bunbum · 04/03/2024 13:28

Very reassuring - thanks all.

Yes. It has to be.
I have no appointments at all for four weeks. There isn't just a GP shortage in primary care.
