Glasgow - where to live (and where to avoid)

Hello lovely people!

Two friends of ours are moving to Glasgow from overseas, and they're looking for somewhere to rent for a couple of years before buying. He's a doctor, his wife is a physio.

Which areas are "nice", and which should be avoided please?

Ah, so Finnieston is more studenty, by the sound of it. Do any of the "family" areas in East Ren have their own high street or similar? We'd love somewhere that's still got a bit of a buzz, where you don't have to get a bus every time you want to find a nice cafe etc. Maybe the West End is a better bet than East Ren? We'll be coming over to look, obviously, but appreciate any pointers (not originally from the UK, so no local knowledge or friends in Glasgow to ask!)

Have a look at Strathbungo or around Broomhill or Victoria Park - still Glasgow so benefit from the closeness to the Centre (& West End for Broomhill/Victoria Park), but a bit naicer than Finnieston.

Giffnock, Netherlee and Clarkston all do have a high street with some restaurants and shops. Newton Mearns less so - there are a few little clusters of shops and a small shopping centre, but Newton Mearns is now so massive that nearly everywhere is a drive away, whereas the other towns in ER would be easily walkable into the high street from anywhere. So it depends if you want to walk or drive.

mrgrimblesgerbil · 03/03/2024 20:29

Brilliant, thanks! I'll check out those areas now.

Really good shout. My sister is in Jordanhill, but v close to Broomhill. Also very walkable to Partick (where DS is, which is more gritty but has lots of personality).

I love Strathbungo for the very reasons you've said. Also lovely properties in Shawlands/ surrounds.

I'm very comfortable, but I don't have a spare few million.

Well exactly, Whitecraigs isn't an option for you, so saying urgh, no way would I live there is just your own prejudice.

(I don't live in Whitecraigs, so not invested in it by any means. Just don't like the unnecessary rudeness. I'd be very happy if someone gifted me a Whitecraigs house and would more than happily suffer the misery of living in such a boring place, driving one of my (obligatory) Porsches to Finnieston to have dinner in a nice restaurant, without sneering about how dreadful it is).

Edited

I'm agreeing to disagree. It's not prejudice, it's my view. I'm sure it's lovely for folk that like it, but not for me. If I was gifted a house there I'd sell it & buy in the West End. I just would.

For the record, I'd do the same if I was given a house in Bearsden/ Lenzie/ Milngavie/ Giffnock.

It's an OPINION people. Lordy 😆

Spanglybangles · 03/03/2024 21:14

It’s some time since my family lived in Glasgow. But my parents initially lived in a flat on Byres Road after marrying and prior to starting a family. Once they had a child, they bought a family home on Victoria Park Drive South where they lived for a number of years with my 2 older siblings and latterly me. We moved away from Glasgow, but my eldest sibling stayed in a beautiful flat during the uni years in Ruskin Terrace, just off Great Western Road which I loved visiting, gorgeous tall windows, so nice. If budget allows, the West End really is lovely.

weebarra · 03/03/2024 21:27

I grew up in Lenzie and my parents still live there (in a Victorian villa so not beige 😂). I wouldn't live there, it's nice and very close to Glasgow by train, but very quiet and not many amenities. I'd definitely prefer somewhere with a bit more of a buzz about it.

I'd do the very same. The West End will always be my favourite part of Glasgow.

(And if we're talkin' millions I'd buy myself a pad on Kingsborough Gardens.)

It's hardly anti Giffnock/Newton Mearns hate speech to say as much!

We'd be neighbours Hemlock - Kingsborough Gardens is my exact dream street!

Thank you!

Oooh Kingsborough- that would make 3 of us. Could also put up with Laurel Park Gardens in Jordanhill or the top bit of Observatory Road. South Side I'd have a lush main door flat on Queen's Drive (my mate has one & I love it there- he bought it for a song 30 years ago).

I think the city is looking very rundown, tbh. If the OP's friends aren't wanting a city centre type location, I'd try Uddingston. A bit further south of the city, maybe Lanark. Both have some stunning houses.

It's just a big city, standard ebb & flow. My friends stay in Uddingston. It does have a decent main street & a bit of a buzz. They like it. Easy into town.

HemlockSoup · 04/03/2024 10:35

@Puffalicious and @PrueLeithsChunkyNecklace, I look forward to bumping into you both in our lovely residents’ garden once we’ve all landed our fancy pads in Kingsborough Gardens!

Agree on both fronts. The city centre is the worst I've ever seen it, I don't go in any more.
Uddingston is a good suggestion, or Bothwell if their budget stretches to that. I like both high streets.

I'd say around Byres Road in the West End is the closet you'd get to Stockbridge in Edinburgh. Finnieston is more like Leith. Clarkston has a great wee High Street in East Ren and Giffnick is worth a look too.

Mum2jenny · 04/03/2024 20:19

My dgm lived in Netherlee and it was considered a good location many years ago with plenty of local shops. Not sure how good it is now though.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 04/03/2024 20:51

@Mum2jenny

I went to Netherlee Primary School in the mid-late 60's.

Help is needed by me! I have just retired and I am not a typical retiree, no move to countryside for me. I am a divorcee and have brought my 2 kids up entirely by myself so money is not plentiful. My question is where is a decent area to move to in Glasgow for a rather trendy old dear!

What's your budget like? If you're loaded and like trendy, definitely the West End.

NarwhalBuddy · 16/03/2026 13:58

You’d probably be better starting a new thread @Oldwuman as this thread is initially from
2024 and people often just reply to the original poster.

Area also depends on entirely budget and what you’re looking for.
