Do you wash your trainers?

I don’t think you’re supposed to. I asked a sales assistant in a sports shop and she said no. They are impossible to clean otherwise! I bought a white dabber for my white Superga and that didn’t make much difference so I’m going to put my high top Vans in the machine later and see what happens. Got to be better than grubby trainers. Do you wash your trainers? How do you clean them otherwise?

I put them in the washing machine, they're fine.

Turkeyhen · 03/03/2024 09:45

Canvas superga are fine to go in the washing machine.

DrunkenElephant · 03/03/2024 09:45

In the washing machine inside a pillowcase.

Never had a problem.

Always in the washing machine, including Birkenstocks too!

xsquared · 03/03/2024 09:48

Not in the washing machine, but I use Boot Buddy if it's been muddy.

I have several pairs of trainers for running, amd if it'd been particularly bad, then I just rinse in clean water and dry the inside with scrunched up newspaper.

I don't try to keep mine in immaculate condition though.

greenacrylicpaint · 03/03/2024 09:53

depends
sports trainers absolutely don't go in the washer. they would lose their support and cushioning properties.

fashion trainer - go for it. but you might shorten the life span of the trainers and your washing machine.

Kastri · 03/03/2024 09:55

I wash my Vans, they are fine.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 03/03/2024 09:56

For those who wash in the washing machine, what temperature do you use and do you put it on a low spin cycle? Do you use a delicate/ handwash setting or just a normal one?

Mouse82 · 03/03/2024 10:13

I never have.

WithIcePlease · 03/03/2024 10:18

My trainers go round at 40 with old towels. Spin at 600 so they don't end up shaped like a banana. I dry them by the air vents at the bottom of the tumble dryer.
No problems at all other than converse - the metal eyelets rusted on to the white fabric
I've done leather and suede ones too - suede ends up a bit stiff but soon softens up with wear/a brush

Don't wash gore Tex because it ruins it

To my mind, if they are so grubby that I'm thinking of chucking them out, nothing is lost if I wash them and it goes wrong but over the years, this has only been a problem with Converse as above.

DrunkenElephant · 03/03/2024 10:25

No higher than 30 degrees for me.

Accidentally washed converse at 40 degrees and the glue started to melt and stained the white canvas yellow.

MimiHendrix · 03/03/2024 10:32

I’ve machine washed my trainers and Converse/Vans-type shoes forever with no issues. I put them on a normal, 30 degree cycle inside a pillowcase.

(Converse take ages to dry, so only wash them in warmer months).

Ive got some lightweight Nike mesh trainers that I wear to commute in during the warmer months and I wash them every weekend in summer to avoid sweaty smells. They dry very quickly and I always have nice, clean shoes.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 03/03/2024 10:34

I put them on a v cool wash and they come out looking great.

WelcomeMarch · 03/03/2024 10:37

I wash my sports trainers. By the time they've been on my sweaty feet for a few hours and through a muddy puddle or two, I think anything the washing machine can throw at them will be a relief.

SpringLobelia · 03/03/2024 10:52

I definitely wash all mine. I tend to be a bit smelly of feet in general though so it's part of the regular routine.

Droolylabradors · 03/03/2024 11:37

I wash trainers and trail shoes and sheepskin slippers in the washing machine.

Esp the insoles to stop the smell!

I've washed leather and suede, all are fine. BUT we have got an everhot cooker so the shoes dry very quickly overnight on the heated top.

I'd worry about them smelling a bit damp if you can't dry them quickly on a radiator etc.

TheChosenTwo · 03/03/2024 11:46

Only certain ones, not my gym or running trainers as I’ve been told that it ruins the protective cushioning inside them but I get rid of them every now and then anyway when I can tell they’re ‘done’.
Other trainers I definitely throw in the washing machine, inside a pillowcase. Once made the mistake of putting some in the tumble drier which looking back was a bit silly 😂

DesignForLife01 · 03/03/2024 12:57

Good point on the temperature. I did mine on 30 degrees and they have come out fine.

Oh, really?

I've put trainers in the washing machine but never Birkenstocks.

What temperature etc?

30' wash, I actually just put them in with my normal washing load and then dry out on the washing line in the sun
