Do you only talk to a therapist if you've a serious problem in your life?

I spoke to one a few years ago after a bad breakup, spoke to her 4 times, which helped a lot. I haven't since because I'm over the heartbreak, but I've been feeling a bit down lately due to something indirectly connected to the breakup and feel I need to talk to someone but don't want to burden friends. It's not a serious issue but I just don't feel myself. Would it be reasonable to contact her again?

Absolutely it would be reasonable.
People see therapists for all sorts of reasons.

Rainbows89 · 02/03/2024 18:16

Yes! People talk to therapists about all kinds of things!

Damedidnot · 02/03/2024 18:26

Yes definitely talk to her again. I have recently done similar and gone back to the therapist I saw after my divorce, which was several years ago.

Thanks for that. I suppose because it's not a serious issue this time, I wasn't sure, but she was easy to talk to before and helped me feel better in myself.

Yes ! I have a lovely life and still talk to a therapist once a month or two

it is like a mental spring clean

hollyandivyknickers · 02/03/2024 18:37

I mean No !

Really good idea . These things can really bring us down and affect our life and talking to someone qualified can help you move forwards - do it

I’m a therapist. I have people come back quite often for a tune up or a catch up. It’s lovely.

theduchessofspork · 02/03/2024 18:39

Of course. It’s a completely standard thing to do.

It really isn’t.

I've been seeing mine for 6 years. I'm not in a constant state of crisis! Sometimes it's just helpful to have someone with a bit of distance to talk things through

Toomuch44 · 02/03/2024 20:09

Doesn't matter what the issue is, if you feel it'll help, then speak to her. On the other hand, it's her job (which she'll be doing because she's passionate about it - at least my DH is and he's one).

CaribbeanCupcake · 02/03/2024 20:31

If it's impacting you then I would say it's serious OP. Go for it x

PosyPrettyToes · 02/03/2024 20:32

If you can afford it and you are open to the process, therapy is great. It’s not just for crisis responses. Think of it like seeing a personal trainer but for your mental health.

What are you talking about? Of course it is.

Auburnbrown · 05/03/2024 19:11

I've made an appointment for later this week as feeling quite down in myself at the moment.

Well done@Auburnbrown I find just talking about stuff out loud makes such a difference.
yoy don’t have to feel bad about ‘boring’ someone and can stay whatever you feel.

I hope it helps.
