Chapter Books for 5 year old

Hi all,

My DS turns 5 soon and I'd like to recommend some books for people to get him. I'm keen to move towards chapter longer books but only really know of Roald Dahl which we already have. Are there any particular books that your children have enjoyed reading? Seeing books by David Walliams and Tom Fletcher recommended but really like word of mouth suggestions too.

Thanks for your time, all genres welcome!

It's been a while but I think mine were a bit older when they were reading David Williams.

Younger chapter books we enjoyed were
Spy dogs and spy pups - a group of mystery solving dogs.
Astrosaurs - a slightly odd combo of dinosaurs and space travel.
Olga da Polga - adventures of a guinea pig.

Not quite chapter books but they both loved horrible histories

I would definitely recommend Tom Fletcher, DS loves those. Also lots of the Enid Blyton books are great for that age - Faraway Tree, Famous Five etc. There are some dated ideas in them (particularly gender roles) but assuming you'll be reading them with him (?) I actually found this was a great way to discuss things and challenge some of the ideas that he would be exposed to anyway.

Before we read longer chapter books like that, we read a lot of things that are a similar level comprehension wise, but where each chapter is a complete story as well e.g. My Naughty Little Sister, Paddington Bear...

My naughtiest little sister is good for that age range. My son also enjoyed some dick king smith's- the hodgeheg springs to mind.

David Walliams books are trash, I'd only recommend those to my enemies.

Slanketblanket · 02/03/2024 16:46

Avoid David Williams, it's sexist rubbish

SpinningTopps · 02/03/2024 16:47

Enid blyton. Faraway tree is great for starters but my 5 yo is enjoying the adventure series at the moment.

Also the worst witch.

The hotel flamingo series are a great transition to chapter books as still have lots of pictures. Nice gentle storylines too.

MamaMode · 02/03/2024 18:21

The 'Diary of a wimpy kid' collection??

Lovingitallnow · 02/03/2024 18:22

We loved Toto the ninja cat by Dermot O Leary and Boot books about robots that DH and I found bizarrely compelling- he got the night with the ending and I had to borrow it after to finish it.

Clawdy · 02/03/2024 18:24

The "Kitty" books by Bel Mooney are fun, they were very popular with the five year olds I used to teach.

Lovethatforyouhun · 02/03/2024 18:27

Walliams are trash

Clawdy · 02/03/2024 18:28

I do think Diary Of A Wimpy Kid series is a bit more suitable for seven plus age group.

angelopal · 02/03/2024 18:37

Thorfinn the nicest Viking are good for this age. DS is 6 and we have started reading the best quest series to him.

KingscoteStaff · 02/03/2024 18:57

My Naughty Little Sister
Mr Majeika
The Worst Witch
Sophie’s Tom series

Rainbow Magic - Toni the Butterfly Fairy etc etc etc
Beast Quest
these last two series are quite formulaic, but satisfying for emerging readers.

Thank you all for taking the time to suggest some titles for us, some of them look brilliant and exactly what I was looking for. Very much appreciated x

The Milly-Molly-Mandy stories, about a small girl growing up in a village, and her family and friends. The first ones were published in the 1920s, so the clothes, technology, transport etc are of that period.

Curlewwoohoo · 02/03/2024 20:18

Daisy and the trouble with... Eg zoos, school trips... But Kes Grey. Very highly recommended for this age!

SaturdayGiraffe · 02/03/2024 20:20

Jill Tomlinson books: The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark etc

ShoeJunkie · 02/03/2024 20:20

The Flat Stanley series has been enjoyed by both my DCs.

Imicola · 02/03/2024 20:25

My DD (5) enjoys the Grimwood series by Nadia Shireen, Dick King Smith, the Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton, Rabbit and Bear and the Dragonstorm series by Alastair Chisolm.

Imicola · 02/03/2024 20:29

Also the Anna Hibiscus books and others by Atinuke.

Nudgethatjudge · 02/03/2024 20:31

Bad Nana books are funny. I think there's 3 in the series.

shellyleppard · 02/03/2024 20:33

Dog man by

Aria999 · 02/03/2024 20:34

Pamela Butchart

JumpinJellyfish · 02/03/2024 20:34

Agree with so many of the recommendations here - my naughty little sister, worst witch, loads of dick king smith. Paddington actually has some trickier vocab so I read those to DS (5) rather than him reading them himself.

Also the Claude stories are brilliant - the books have plenty of illustrations so a good transition from picture books.
