Tooth even more painful after filling?

LazyKipper · 02/03/2024 14:42

Went to a private dentist for the first time and he said I need 6 fillings replaced. Had the first one done, upper right molar. Old filling was massive. Dentist replaced it with a composite one. Once the anaesthetic wore off I realised the bite was high so went back 2 days later to get it adjusted which he's done but now I have pain when chewing, bad sensitivity to hot and cold that stays painful for about 30 minutes after and also random pain in throughout the day that feels like it's in my cheekbone.

Is all this normal after having a filling? It hurts more than before I had the filling and is worrying me as it cost £400 and if it's made things worse I have no more money to spend on dental work.

Will this settle down?

Anyone?

Sounds like nerve pain that may settle. What did the dentist say to expect?

LazyKipper · 02/03/2024 15:32

@LouisaGuy He didn't say what to expect. Just that it was a very big filling that he replaced and that in 8-10 years it'll need a crown. I've not had composite fillings before so am now worried that when I go back for the other side of my mouth to be done I'll have pain after on that side too. If it doesn't go away then both sides of my mouth will hurt.

I have a ginormous filling - in fact there is more filling than tooth there! Once when it was redone it was a full 2 weeks before the sensitivity wore off but it was fine after that.

Rainydayinlondon · 02/03/2024 15:41

I think the area around the jaw bone will be bruised and your gums are inflamed. I had this with a large filling that was replaced. I’d give it a week and if you see no improvement ask to see him again

LazyKipper · 02/03/2024 15:45

Okay thanks everyone. I'll give it some more time. I due to go back in 2 months for my other side to be done so if its not settled by then I'll talk to him about what to do. It's just the thought of things being made worse than before when I have no money left to fix it that's stressing me out!

I am having the same problem. Sensodyne toothpaste is your best friend during this time. It usually helps calm my systems within a couple of days.

LazyKipper · 02/03/2024 15:57

@2ApplesShortOfABasket I already use sendosyne. I dread to think what it would feel like if I didn't. My retainer doesn't fit any more either after having the filling so I have lots of aches over all of my teeth as they are already starting to move.

Also try slooshing your teeth and gums with warm salt water (not too strong) for a few minutes as your final rinse. I find that helps with sensitivity and sore gums. 🌹

Justhereforaibu1 · 02/03/2024 16:02

How long ago was this, sorry if I've missed it. Try putting sensodyne straight onto the tooth between brushing

BelleStar2023 · 02/03/2024 16:03

Mine are like this after fillings as I have really sensitive teeth. It usually takes one to two weeks to settle, depending on how big the filling is.

BungleandGeorge · 02/03/2024 16:05

It can take a while to settle down.
what was the reason for needing fillings replaced though? I didn’t think they did this anymore, amalgam fillings last a long time. I’d be suspicious of why 4 need replacing and £400 pounds is really expensive presuming it a straightforward composite.

LazyKipper · 02/03/2024 16:06

@Justhereforaibu1 It was 5 days ago now. I know that's not that long ago but it's my first time experiencing discomfort like this after a filling. I've had big amalgam fillings before and felt no discomfort at all after but after this composite one it's been very uncomfortable. The filling is massive though. Basically more filling than tooth so I imagine it's very deep too.

@BungleandGeorge Well up until the start of this year I had an NHS dentist and had been told for years that my teeth were all good etc. Then the NHS dentist went private just before my check up so I switched to a nearer private dentist as I was starting to get some pain in a root canalled tooth. This dentist did full xrays and said most of my fillings were very old and in bad shape and that he could see decay underneath them on the xray and that I would need to replace them otherwise they will get worse and more costly to fix. I did wonder about how true this was though as none of my NHS dentists ever said that to me. So i had this one replaced as that's where some of the pain was and he replaced a smaller amalgam one next to it with amalgam. The cost of these two fillings together was just over £400. I've got 4 more to be replaced all at around the same cost so it has totally obliterated my savings as I didn't have a lot to begin with. Hence the worry that this tooth may need more work doing and I don't have the money for it.

How’s your tooth been? I had a filling nearly 4 weeks ago and it was fine for like 3 weeks and this week it’s started hurting! Just like an ache but also when I floss it’s so annoying I had 3 done and one of them had this but straight away and I’m having that sorted now another one is doing it! Don’t understand. Literally never had this before

SatsumaZoom · 31/07/2024 08:33

@SAJMUM101 did your tooth settle? I am exactly the same and 4 weeks in....

SAJMUM101 · 31/07/2024 08:34

A little bit but in all honestly I’m still having issues! Currently in the process of getting the filling redone and it seems to be helping

SatsumaZoom · 31/07/2024 08:42

That's what I'm worried I need. Best of luck and thanks for replying

NOTSUREWHATIMDOINHERE · 20/08/2024 13:37

i had a wisdom tooth filled with composite. It was fine until a bit must have chipped off and I didn't notice , decay set in, they had to drill a lot out and place another massive filling, was in pain for weeks and my tooth died after a few intense hours of worse pain. It was extracted yesterday. I would still always choose composite over silver fillings now though (I still have 2 silver ones in)
