Hello

Just a quick one. Potential move end of year as a family with 2 small children to Scotland.
If anyone is familiar with these locations or lives / lived there knows someone that lives there etc.
Which has best to offer etc etc

Kinloss | Elgin | Lossiemouth

Be grateful for any info

Thank you!!

The Moray Coast is a really lovely part of Scotland. Elgin is the biggest town in the area but isn't on the coast. Lots of lovely little towns and villages along the moray coast. Big RAF base at Lossiemouth. There used to be a great half marathon from Kinloss to Lossiemouth!

Pondering89 · 01/03/2024 22:12

Where are you moving from OP? I’m from Scotland and have been to Elgin and Lossiemouth many times, although I can’t speak for Kinloss.

Lossiemouth is more of a tourist destination, lovely beaches, kitsch shops. Elgin is probably more practical as it’s bigger with more in it (not a lot more mind you, it’s still a small town). It’s only a 10 minute drive between the two though so wouldn’t matter too much which one you go for.

@Pondering89 thank you for replying.
Moving from Oxfordshire.

I did see that Elgin and Lossie were close to one another. I would say definitely looking also for the best location with things to do for the children.

thank you for replying :)

@Theonlyoneiknow thank you for replying.
I hear lovely things about the Moray coast.

It's very nice up there, lovely beaches. Relatively dry too.

Pondering89 · 01/03/2024 22:32

@Mama0ftw0 One thing I would say is that whilst these places are lovely, they are extremely rural. 1.5 hours to the nearest city (Aberdeen), 3.5 hours to Glasgow.

Scotland really doesn’t have as much rain as people think it does but it is much colder up here than you’ll be used to in the South East!

Mama0ftw0 · 01/03/2024 22:57

@Pondering89 thank you.

I saw this. Is there much at Inverness?

Good to know about the rain !!

You might get more responses from residents by having the post moved to Scotsnet?

I’ve only visited a Lossiemouth based friend there and both Elgin and Lossiemouth were lovely to visit but can’t comment on living there though she loves it. You might prefer busier Elgin or the coast at Lossie but they are close together and I’ve always been impressed by how there’s lots of places a short drive away from her.

Mama0ftw0 · 01/03/2024 23:11

@MrsAmaretto funny you should say that as I just this second put a post on ha.

I must say so far I have only heard positive things. Like you said, they are close together which helps.

Thank you very much, I appreciate it.

If they are interested in water/adventure sports, definitely Lossie. We visit friends there every year. It's a gorgeous part of Scotland.

Ipadannie · 01/03/2024 23:32

Inverness is only 45 minutes from Elgin on the train. Its a compact wee city and has a decent theatre in Eden Court.
Lossie is lovely and only 6 miles from Elgin but there's not a lot there in the way of amenities. Good ice cream tho!

I live 5 miles out of Elgin but work in Elgin, lossie is lovely in the summer with lots to do u are only a 10min drive into Elgin, both lossie and Elgin have good schools. Kinloss is a bit further out and is a lot smaller with not so much do, and the nearest town would be Forres. There is not much in the way of shops but it's not too bad

ThisHonestQuail · 01/03/2024 23:47

I would say Elgin is the best of the 3 of them. Inverness would be your closest city to all 3 places btw and they really aren’t that rural. Would Nairn or Inverness be suitable or do you need to be close to Lossie? Best thing to do is come up for a couple of weeks to visit and get a feel for the area ☺️

Mama0ftw0 · 02/03/2024 07:46

@choatey thank you.
Good to know that they are all close by.
Family will be coming up to stay so probably tell them to stay in Lossie.
Hoping that we can visit for a week before.
Thank you about the School information. I will need to look at Primary School for one child so this is good to know. Thank you

@ThisHonestQuail Yes would have to be close to Lossie.
Yes I am hoping to come up for a week or two after Easter.
Thank you for getting back to me.

Oops, I seem to have forgotten that Inverness exists 😳 Sorry OP!

Hayleyk75 · 04/06/2024 12:08

Hi @Mama0ftw0

Have you decided where to move yet?

We are potentially looking at applying for a job in Rothes and living in Elgin.
Moving from New Zealand, so a bit further to go for us 😄.
We have family in Glasgow but the job opportunity has presented itself in Rothes, so we are considering it...scary.
I am worried it will be to far away from everything, and we will regret being so rural. I wish we could just visit quickly to check it out, not able to unfortunately.
We have been to Nairn before which was nice, I guess most places will be nice, it's just the decision of if it's best for the kids and the schools etc.
I hope you find a great place to live, let me know if you decide to move to Moray and what you think. 🙂

Mama0ftw0 · 04/06/2024 12:41

@Hayleyk75 Hello literally moved here last week!! lol

Very kind of you to message.

Wow why the move from NZ!!

I live in Lossiemouth not far at all from Elgin. Went with Lossiemouth because it is right next to partners work however many he works with live in Elgin.

Just looking around the schools at the minute and the area. We are only a few minutes walk from the beach which is nice.

When will you know about the job?

Hayleyk75 · 04/06/2024 12:47

We are only in the early stages at the moment. I'm so impatient, so this waiting and interview stage always seems to take so long. Ha.
I have 3 kids (6, 11 & 13) so if we do end up getting the job, there will be so many things to sort out!
Is Lossie nice? Being on the coast would be lovely.

Mama0ftw0 · 04/06/2024 20:03

Ahhh okay. So could be a while yet?

So far, I like what I see however it has only been a week.
So many places to visit and lots to do.
Looking forward to the summer here.
