How do you sleep at night, TG the judge gave him a decent sentence.

He had even dug a hole for the box he buried her in.😡

Can you link the story? You may get a better debate going if people didn't need to navigate away to research the story.

LakeTiticaca · 29/02/2024 22:53

The verdict was absolutely shocking. It was glaringly obvious it was premeditated murder. He even dug the grave weeks before he killed her FFS!!!

DevaleraSpawnOfSatan · 29/02/2024 22:57

Thank you @pantsalot

I was so incensed by the second half of the British Airways killer I was too incensed to think straight.

Chanel 4 The Jury - murder trial ( different murder)

just been on and it highlights the issues with trial by jury in the UK
2 juries watch the same evidence, battle it out for a decision and come to different conclusions

And before you pile on - I am not suggesting we don’t have juries. Watch the program and hear the thoughts put forward of those in the legal system

WhateverMate · 29/02/2024 23:03

Absolutely shocking OP.

By the way, what does 'TG' mean in your opening post?

DevaleraSpawnOfSatan · 29/02/2024 23:05

TG Thank God.

That will be the Irish in me.

Why not? Juries are often influenced by things completely irrelevant to the evidence. I'm a solicitor and I think juries are a complete gamble.

As for this case, I think he successfully managed to portray her as an upper class spoiled snob whose family looked down on him and drove him to the brink of insanity. I agree it was premeditated though.

XelaM · 29/02/2024 23:10

I actually think he had terrible legal advice at the police station. Why would he suddenly confess and tell police where the body was? His interviews were a total mess.

Surely he told them because the evidence against him was damning. The longer he obstructed (by not revealing the location), the worse sentence he would receive.

thesleepyhoglet · 29/02/2024 23:14

No wonder she wanted to divorce him. I don't care what he thought about his wife. Killing her and depriving his children of a mother shows how utterly selfish a person he is.

MissingMoominMamma · 29/02/2024 23:14

He took a weapon with him.

He’d dug a grave in advance.

How the fuck is that not murder?

iwafs · 29/02/2024 23:15

Trial by jury used to be a good concept. Not any more. It needs to be stopped.

I recently did jury service and it was shocking. A couple of people did not understand the judge’s instructions (British people - no language barrier). This was rectified as half of us understood and therefore explained it to those who didn’t. Another said: “I will not send anyone to prison!” Clearly didn’t understand the oath taken - to decide guilty/not guilty based on evidence. Not to mention that the judge does the sentencing, not the bloody jury.

It was so fucking grim that I considered writing to the judge. But then I decided that I’d probably get into trouble for talking about deliberation room stuff. And that nothing would be done about this broken system anyway. So I just buggered off.

Because there are jurors who refuse to vote guilty and condemn another person, regardless of what’s happened. I’ve sat in the deliberation room with a moron like this. No evidence based conclusion. I’ll tell you that I wanted to commit a murder in that fucking deliberation room!

Edited

After sitting on the jury of a man accused of multiple rapes, sexual assaults and voyeurism against a number of women I am against jury trials too. The majority of the people on my jury were men. The stuff I heard during deliberations still haunts me. Even in the face of photographic proof of naked, unconscious women, my god it was shocking. He got away with the rape charges. It made me more wary of men in general after hearing what some of the very unassuming, mild mannered men on that jury were saying out loud.

LunaTheCat · 29/02/2024 23:20

That is just appalling- that poor poor women and those children. There are no words.😢

GirlOverboard123 · 29/02/2024 23:24

Good on the judge for making the jury sit and listen to the sentencing. He clearly was not happy about the verdict:

“An adjustment disorder is a mild disturbance which rarely leads to outbursts of violence. In your case, it appears to have disappeared almost immediately after killing your wife.

Good on him too for imposing such a long sentence (for manslaughter).

I hope those ten jury members were watching the documentary and feel ashamed of themselves. Such a stupid verdict.

"No comment" is always the best way forward (for the suspect) in these type of extremely serious cases. Also the solicitor should have told him to say "no comment" to ALL questions, not pick and choose which to answer. His interviews were terrible and the solicitor just sat there.

thesleepyhoglet · 29/02/2024 23:41

@XelaM I didn't see his solicitor in the interviews- two police offices and the family Liasonnofficrr and him.

The jury should be ashamed. Clearly stupid. They were clearly bamboozled by the adjustment discorder crap and should have just gone with their gut. Then again, I wasn't there to see how he presented.

It wasn't the family liaison officer- it was his solicitor as far as I could tell. The family liaison officer is there for the victim's family- not the suspect.

God I haven't watched the programme but just read that article
Terrifying
The children were right there as well!!!

LakeTiticaca · 01/03/2024 10:11

At least his release has been been blocked......for now!!

HelloMiss · 01/03/2024 15:35

His own fault!

I had a similar experience. It was shocking both inside & outside the jury room. The police had done a dreadful job, the jury was full of uninformed & disinterested people. Both defendant & victim were failed by the system
