How to ask for pay I want

Hello everyone,

If a job has a salary bracket of 24k to 26k, how can I politely angle for 26k? I have been offered higher in the past, but I don't mind taking less pay for less stress. 26k is OK, but wouldn't want to go lower.

If I ask for 26k, will it put them off me because it's the maximum? I haven't been asked, but I want to be prepared in case they do ask me.

Thank you

I would just say something like “given my experience and previous salaries I would be expecting an offer at the top end of the range”… but also fine to wait until an offer made to negotiate this?

Collie86 · 29/02/2024 20:16

@ExcitingRicotta I like that, I will be straightforward but open to negotiate

Never feel bad asking for more or fairer pay. The people interviewing you would have done exactly the same when they got their jobs.

Usually, they offer you the job first.

I would respond with a "excellent I'm delighted to have been offered the position. Given my experience and skills, I'm looking for a salary in the region of £26-28k. What is the anticipated start date?"

Then see where they go! Always aim higher than the posted salary OP!!

This.

Don't think twice about it. A man wouldn't. Worst case is they say no.

I offer for a lot of roles and women are much more likely to take a bottom of the bracket offer without trying to negotiate. Stand up for your own worth and give it a go. They won't think worse if you for trying and if they do it's a good sign they're not a good employer.

I just finished the interview. I asked for the max and said I was open to negotiate.

It's for a remote content writing role. Everything went well. They’re a small company with a casual culture. I'm just in two minds about the word count they mentioned. They said around 2k words is what they target in a work day . It varies so it won’t always be that count. Still, it put me off a bit. If they make an offer, should I just accept. Hard to get remote work these days & I’m so exhausted looking.

Applied for some admin roles as well, but they can be quite stressful too. Aghh

Edited

Why does it put you off? Sorry I don’t follow.

Hope the interview went well 🤞🏻

@ExcitingRicotta the interview went well. It put me off because it’s a high word count per day & even the interviewer admitted it was! Would have been nice to know in the job ad. I'm glad for the interview though and I’ll see what happens next. Worst case scenario, there is another position I’m listed for.

Update: I'm still waiting on interview two, but during the interview, they did mention I was the 2nd candidate. Worried now that this will fall through because they had close to 100 applications.

I'm overseas right now so I'm going for remote roles.

Would it make sense to go back to the UK and search? I've avoided this because a) I don't have enough funds, and b) The market isn't the best right now, so if I apply online (in or out of the UK), I'm still competing with loads of people.

Should I go back and apply? Would it make a difference? Or should I just continue the remote route?
