Connecting flights? What if I miss connection

I am flying to Australia later this year. I live in the north east but flights are much cheaper so I always fly from Heathrow. When I’ve travelled before I’ve got the train to London, usually the night before

I’ve found a really good deal which includes a connecting BA flight from Newcastle, landing at Heathrow 4 hours before my next flight leaves.

But what happens if this flight is delayed or cancelled? Because it’s a different airline I’m assuming there’s no responsibility for the airline to do anything and I’d be screwed? Would my travel insurance cover the cost of a replacement ticket for the onward journey? Has anyone any experience of this?

So, it all depends if you are making one single booking or not.

Let’s say you book with BA to LHR and then Qantas on to Aus. If this combo was offered as one booking on the BA website (which it may be due to a code share or interline booking) then it’s all fine, if you miss the connection they have to put you on the next flight and you’ll be eligible for compensation if your flight arrives more than 3 hours late at the final destination.

if you buy the flights separately and have 2 separate tickets then you are indeed screwed and would be a no show boarding your Qantas flight at LHR.

If you are booking with BA from Newcastle to Sydney (or whichever city) then you are covered. You should ask at check if your bags can be checked through to Sydney.

Depends on whether you have booked a through ticket or two separate ones

If you have booked a NCL -LON and a LON - SYD one separately, then as far as the LON-SYD element goes it is your responsibility to be there, you are making your own way to the airport
