Has anything worked for you against hair loss?

Just that really. Has anything, vitamins/supplements-wise, ever clear ly helped counteract hair loss? I don't particularly want it longer - I just want it to stop thinnng around the temples and front hairline!! I'm 42 and no sign of menopause, generally eat a fairly healthy diet (although avoid diary).

I take bamboo silica from either 5 Greens or British supplements, my brush is pretty empty these days and I have a lot of baby hair. It’s been about six months it’s not been a fast thing.
my friend has had success with biotin.

LaRevolution · 28/02/2024 22:10

Thanks @itwasntmetho - that's the second rec I've had for biotin. I guess I'm s bit sceptical generally as it feels as though if there was something that worked, we'd have no bald men!

I also took biotin and used the Umberto Gianni "Grow Long" range. I also started using a hair towel when I got out of the shower instead of a normal towel and had a ghd hot brush (instead of straighteners) for styling. My boyfriend put a lot of research into it and bought me one after he was convinced it was better than straightening. The combination seemed to work for me. I sympathise with how you're feeling!

Just to note, I also didn't want it longer; just to stop falling out! But the "grow long" is a stimulant shampoo and conditioner range

CoffeeBeansGalore · 28/02/2024 23:52

L'Occitane strength and volume shampoo. Take super Vitamin B complex.
Worked wonders for me. 18 months on my hair is thick & healthy again.

KissMyArt · 28/02/2024 23:55

Have you had blood tests OP?

My hair was thinning badly and it turned out my thyroid was very underactive.

newyearnewknees · 28/02/2024 23:58

No good advice but to save you the trouble, I have been using rosemary oil several times a week for a YEAR after seeing many before and after photos and...it did nothing.

Loopzy · 29/02/2024 00:02

My hair has really thinned, but I am menopausal. I recently had some blood tests and have been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid. It might be worth seeing the GP for blood tests.

Raspberryjamsandwich · 29/02/2024 00:10

Watching with interest as I'm exactly the same.

Ladybird69 · 29/02/2024 00:44

I was scared to wash or brush my hair as it was coming out in fist sized clumps, as well as feeling exhausted all of the time . I started taking loads of vitamin tablets, omega 3 and marine collagen capsules. It’s been 6 months but the hair loss has stopped completely! These are the tablets that I think really helped. Good luck Op

Iron tablets, it’s taken a while and I use ‘gentle iron’ but it’s working. I also take biotin but started that recently after the hair loss stopped. I had blood tests and was diagnosed with extremely low iron.

chocolaterevs · 29/02/2024 08:09

My hair has started to regrow since I started using the rice water protein range by Kitsch. Lots of reviews saying the same. I have loads of new hair growth around temples and top front. Regular shampoos (and hair dye) aren't great for scalp health.

I'd try that, get tested for iron and thyroid issues, and make sure you are taking a high quality multivitamin, eating plenty of protein and drinking lots of water.

superplumb · 29/02/2024 08:11

Minoxidil or nioxin are apparently the only proven ways to thicken hair

Startingagainandagain · 29/02/2024 08:21

I am in the same boat OP. I take skin/hair/nails supplements, multivitamins and I have been using minoxidil.

My hairdresser yesterday recommended Nioxin but I am not sure if it can be combined with minoxidil...

I have to keep my hair really short but still it is is really thin at the front.

Namenamchange · 29/02/2024 08:22

A few things you can try: avoid shampoo with panthanol, you could try protecting it against breakage, so heat protection, and a bonnet, silk pillow cases. Try not to tie it up tightly. Use a wet brush.

I feel like HRT has had a positive effect on my hair and the thickness.

betterangels · 29/02/2024 08:27

Redken Extreme range with following anti-snap leave-in treatment.

Seeline · 29/02/2024 08:31

I had very low ferritin and my hair was falling out by the handful. Iron tablets really helped.

Clearinguptheclutter · 29/02/2024 08:37

Following

I have been using Plantur 39 but I’m highly sceptical that any shampoo or similar can help tbh though some may help with the illusion of thickness

I’m 45 and recently started taking biotin and HRT (for a range of reasons) so hopeful on one of those

last 2 years or so I’ve suffered periodic hair loss and it is constant for 3-4 months then stops suddenly without me changing anything . Similarly to after having a baby when I lost a lot of hair (far more than I gained during pregnancy before anyone points that out). So at least in my case I think hormones are to blame. No bald spots but very noticably thinner and stragglier round the front hairline.

What iron did you buy Seeline or was it prescribed?

IncompleteSenten · 29/02/2024 09:01

Nothing. Not even regaine.
I have alopecia and absolutely no supplement or spray or anything I've tried has cured it or helped in any way.

My tips are keep your hair short. When it gets too bad I shave my head. Taking control helps.
At the moment it's growing in and I've got a really short cut and I brush it forward in an extreme combover I suppose. Short like this it looks like a hairstyle choice.
I also have this powder that comes in a tiny pot and I dab it on. One of the problems you get with hair loss is shiny scalp showing through. Hide that and your hair seems less sparse.

I also have a few wigs for when it's especially bad. A few funky, colourful wigs can cheer you up.

I know it's upsetting but if you can get to a place where you can accept it then it's easier to deal with. I make jokes about it and am open about it. You can either let these things consume you or you can take control of them. It's not easy. We all have bad days but it's ok.

People who haven't suffered hair loss as a woman often don't realise how tough it is to come to terms with. It's like there's some value in hair and shame in losing it. Which is weird as fuck when you think about it but it is what it is.

I'm sorry to hear this ...It really helped me 😔

How did you use it? I use it diluted in water in a spray bottle (about 10-15 drops in 100ml of water) and spray it on roots twice a day

I've used it for almost 18 months and my hair barely sheds at all and I've got loads of regrowth

I do also take biotin and Florisene iron tabletsas well so admittedly it could be those ! Either way I darent stop doing any of it 😂

terfinthewild · 29/02/2024 09:26

Red onion juice. I put half a red onion in the juicer once a week and then use a cotton ball to run it through my scalp. I leave it for a few hours and then I wash it out. It works and my hair line is better now than it was when I was 15 lol even my husband uses it now and he has little baby hairs growing where his hairline is receding. Also I do not comb or brush my hair anymore I only finger detangle as my post partum hair loss was so bad this time around I was loosing massive amounts through brushing.

pokebowls · 29/02/2024 11:29

Biotin. There is little hard evidence but lots of people find it helps.
Be aware if you have thyroid tests, biotin can mess up the results so stop taking it sometime before testing.

Rosemary oil. Zero evidence that it helps. There is a very flawed study done that keeps being cited but a deep dive inti the study (and not just looking at the abstract) reveals errors, calculation mistakes, transposed figures and poor methodology. It's remarkable it's been peer reviewed and the errors not been picked up.

Minoxidil works. 5%. Buy the men's stuff. It's cheaper than the 5% women's. Pink tax. The men's stuff says not for women but dermatologists say it's the same as the women's high strength 5% stuff at 2/3 the price.

Ensure all your regulars are right. Vit D, Vit Bs and zinc especially

MoonWoman69 · 29/02/2024 16:11

Same boat! Last week I went to Holland and Barratt and bought 150 Biotin capsules, one a day. I'm waiting to start noticing the results. It's awful looking in the mirror and seeing a shiny scalp. I'd be interested to hear about the powder @IncompleteSenten?
