Saturday evening meal ideas

I’m looking for some new ideas for dinners on a Saturday night - what’s your go to recipes ?

DH & I usually have steak and chips on a Saturday night as a little treat but I’m trying to tighten up on the food bill 😫

Curry and bhaji's? They are cheap and easy, and feels like a takeaway. Naan's are easy too.

I second a freshly made curry. Most of the time they're fairly cheap to make once you have built up your range of spices.

We usually have a "treat" tea on a Saturday - something along the lines of a curry with sides, or fajitas/enchiladas with tortilla chips, dips, rice etc.

Another favourite is what the kids call "Aldino's" - pizza, potato wedges, garlice bread, chicken strips and the Dominos-style dips etc all from Aldi.

Burgers, homemade if you wanted to make more of an effort.

Thecatisboss · 28/02/2024 18:39

Just been planning next week's meals and making a Thai Green curry on Saturday which everyone eats and enjoys.

Marblessolveeverything · 28/02/2024 18:44

Fajettas, fake aways Chinese noodles, lasagne coleslaw and chips, kebabs, fish m chips, pizza.

Basically fake aways that can be made with high veg, low meat should be

We like a fake away on Saturday night too. Thinking home made pizza this week as have loads of cheese and mushrooms to use up. 🍕

Cuppachuchu · 28/02/2024 18:49

Or, maybe a Calzone! Never made one, anyone have any tips?

buswankerz · 28/02/2024 18:50

Batch cook a decent curry base then you only need some extra herbs and spices to make a delicious curry like the takeaway.

trulyunruly01 · 28/02/2024 18:51

We have Fakeaways, we work our way around all our town's takeaways - burgers, fried chicken, Chinese-style, Indian-style, pizza, kebabs, fish and chips, Mexican.
The fun is not so much in the main dish but making a version of the sides such as mushy peas (yuck), onion rings, bhajis, dough balls. It's invariably cheaper even with special deals.

Flowersandforests · 28/02/2024 18:52

Like the idea of fake-aways - especially home made pizza !

Homes made schnitzels in ciabatta, with a squeeze of lemon and rocket.

Jamie's Pancetta and Leek Carbonara.

Burrito Bowl with Tortilla Chips.

No specific Saturday meals, but here are my regular dishes:

  • Fajitas with chicken, rice, guacamole, refried beans, cheese, salad etc and everyone helps themselves
  • This Thai curry recipe which I've also made with chicken, or just veg like sweet potato, spinach, bamboo shoots or whatever I have etc https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/thai-pork-peanut-curry
  • Do you have a pressure cooker? Pork or beef ribs are more economical than steak. Buy hoisin sauce and pour about half the bottle over the ribs, add about 1 cup of water, beer or cider. Cook till falling off the bone and drizzle the rest of the hoisin over the top once cooked. Serve with a salad or veg
  • Baked potatoes with a variety of toppings- pending what I have. Homemade Tuna/sweetcorn, coleslaw, coronation chicken, Bolognese
  • Pasta bakes. Tuna, chicken or just veg
  • Pimped pizzas. Either using round pita bread type bases, or plain, frozen pizzas, I add the toppings. Bacon/ham, garlic, anchovies, tomato, mushrooms or whatever I have. I always top with rocket once out of the oven for extra colour and veg
  • Tagine
  • Lasagne, puttanesca, carbonara or your favourite pasta with salad and garlic bread

We often have tapas on a Saturday night. Typical dishes I’ll do will be prawns in garlic butter, patatas bravas, chorizo fried off in a bit of red wine, calamari, chicken wings, marinated pork belly slices, olives, manchego drizzled in honey. Served with a jug of homemade sangria.

Paté dip & toast is the ultimate Saturday family dinner isn't it? 😂😂😂

Just a quarter of a pack though, mind.

Anyone remember that madness?

I'd forgotten that, it was brilliant.

fakeaways here too! Often homemade pizza but this week it’s fajitas. Sometimes it’s all from scratch sometimes a medley of bought bits.
