Yes, I was told it’s viral. After a shitty weekend of no sleep I went back and miraculously they said I needed antibiotics. I knew from the off that I needed them.

DorothyZ · 27/02/2024 21:05

Has the doctor listened to your chest?

I went to the dr before Christmas as I suffer from chest infections felt one coming on as was bring up mucus dr told me to take turmeric and that he wasn’t going to give me antibiotics..we are now in feb and yet another chest infection I left it as I know the dr was going to say the same it’s got worse so I had to call up it was nearly closing time so could only speak to the dr he said I was being pushy about getting antibiotics and that I didn’t need them. I said I did and that I would go over to the hospital if I couldn’t have them so he said ok I will give them to you but you could end up feeling worse with them ……we will see

So he said that you didn’t need them, didn’t listen to your chest, but when you said you’d go to the hospital he gave them to you?

DorothyZ · 28/02/2024 07:01

Do you actually do have the anti biotic then?

Your OP implied you don't.

People do tend to see antibiotics as a magic cure-all and demand them for viruses; GPs are trying to hold the line to prevent antibiotic resistance and the development of superbugs but it’s hard in the face of a certain type of patient, I guess.

The NHS website says that antibiotics are no longer routinely used to treat chest infections.

Yes-dd yesterday. She is on week 5 of an awful cough, coughing up all sorts, temperatures up and down and exhausted. She has her mocks next week. The dr said he 'could give her antibiotics but it would just come back after the course finished so there is no point' . I would argue there is every point. Even if he's correct that it would just come back (which sounds bizarre to me) it would give her body some help to start shifting it. As it is she is back in bed, didn't sleep more than a few hours last night for coughing (and neither did we as we could hear her), and remains absolutely miserable and unwell.

anunlikelyseahorse · 29/02/2024 07:55

Well antibiotics can have some pretty nasty side effects, you don't need to google that, just read the contract-indications on the patient information leaflet. Black hairy tongue, I seem to remember was one of them!

I feel your pain I just don’t know what is going on with these drs …I’ve been taking my antibiotics and I feel lots better after chest infection..back back due to chest infection / lungs maybe ..cough ..sore throat done Covid test it was negative I know my own body and I think / know I was right

Never been told I cant have antibiotics and like you, I get frequent chest infections

The last time I went they gave me steroids + antibiotics

abblesss · 29/02/2024 18:36

What they are doing is cutting the amount of antibiotics they give out because of heard immunity and all that jazz, however, that information doesn't help when you're suffering with a bad throat infection, sweating and feeling very very unwell. Totally sympathy OP I was in your place at the start of Feb, somehow I got better but it took 2.5 weeks.hopefully you'll get over it sooner x

abblesss · 29/02/2024 18:37

I can't even spell herd

It's not herd immunity why they're trying to avoid over prescribing it because of antibiotic resistance.

Because I asked for antibiotics I know my own body his words were in pushy when in fact I said I respected his decision but I would be going to the hospital to seek advice as I was really I’ll

What dr gives out prescriptions for a pushy patient more worrying …if he was adamant I didn’t need them what professional would change there mind for a pushy patient lol
