Help understanding blood test results

I had a blood test today to see how my anaemia is responding and to check for other deficiencies and have already had the blood count related ones updated online. My haemoglobin, MCV and MCH have increased a little, but my MCHC which was always the only one ever within range has dropped right off and is almost literally off the chart. Does anyone know why or what that means, I thought they’re all related and if the other ones are improving that this one would have too. Struggling with heavy painful periods and not getting many answers from my GP.

A low MCHC by itself may indicate you still have iron-deficient anemia (I’m assuming they’re running ferritin tests and the like to actually check, though). It should normally be between 320 and 360; yours is 300, so not terrible. It’s always been near the bottom of normal. I admit, though, I don’t have a great idea of how they’re all related. I do understand it’s to measure the concentration of your hemoglobin, which may have to do with how efficiently your blood can carry oxygen. This may be more helpful:

Understanding MCHC Blood Test Results

An MCHC blood test measures the amount of hemoglobin a red blood cell has relative to the size of the cell. A level too high or low can signal a problem.

Thank you. I think I understand now what it does I just wish I knew why it hasn’t followed the pattern of the others, if that means anything. I think she ordered ferritin too but that one hasn’t come back yet if she has.

That is weird. I'm no help either sorry but hopefully someone else comes along!

If anyone else knows how to interpret results I had some more overnight. My haematocrit, folic acid and b12 have improved but ferritin is worse. Iron, transferrin and transferrin saturation are all poor too though they didn’t test them in November (or have ever 🤦🏻‍♀️) so I don’t know if they’ve improved or worsened. Would appreciate anyone who could offer an opinion on these. I’m not getting much help from my GP and I really thought the iron supplements would have worked more.

The haemoglobin is the most important result so I'd focus on that & not worry about the others. Your haemoglobin has gone up a lot since the last test so that's positive & it's now at the bottom of the normal range so the supplements are working & so continue with those.
Taking iron supplements with some vitamin c eg a small glass of orange juice or a piece of fruit will help your body absorb more iron. Don't take the iron tablets with milk or other calcium rich food as this reduces the amount absorbed.
The body doesn't absorb iron from tablets that well so make sure you are eating lots of iron rich foods at each meal.
Try not to worry those are essentially normal results.

Same as PP, focus on getting your haemoglobin up to 120. These results look a little low, and I imagine you feel fairly tired but they're heading in the right direction. X

Thank you both, I really appreciate it. I’ve been using an oral iron spray so will continue with that, any tablets have had no effect at all previously. I’ve had a gastric sleeve but even before that had issues I think with my gut and absorption. So the ferritin & transferrin saturation % aren’t anything to worry about?
