Invisalign help!

I have just had my second appointment for invisilign, where they said I would be needing 17 aligners, a LOT of 'buttons' much more than I expected, and a bit of filing. However I'm shocked that they think it's only going to take 17 weeks...
Anyone who has had invisilign how accurate was the initial time frame estimate please?
And how bad is the filing? I have wanted this done for years but I'm getting cold feet now!

Please tell me everything I need to know or any tips! Thank you!

I needed way more ‘buttons’ on the teeth than expected, and way more filing. It was all fine, I don’t remember it being overly unpleasant. The retainers are changed every fortnight and are bloomin uncomfortable at first - as the teeth move presumably. It took more than 17 weeks, that sounds very short, but I’m not a dentist. I still went ahead and I am really glad I did - I trusted my dentist knew what he was doing, lol.

Mine took a few more weeks than recommended , mainly due to difficulties getting appointments so had to stay in same retainers a couple of weeks sometimes. I was meant to be about 20 weeks and probably took me about 7 months in total.

The filing is fine, just the sound is worse but is pretty quick and doesn't hurt.

The filing is the worst bit but it literally took about 3 mins, so manageable. Mine only took 12 weeks! But it was just my front teeth. The buttons are fine, they get removed after. Best thing I ever did overall. I'm a year down the line.

The initial number of trays nearly always needs adding to once they rescan you at the end. I had 20 initial trays and am now on 7 additional ones. But no buttons for these which is lovely! I think I'll be done after these 7, it was just some minor gaps that needed closing ever so slightly.

Tips - change to a new aligner before bed and take a paracetamol = less ache, and by the time you get up your teeth are used to it.
Be very strict about wearing them for 22 hours a day, that way it will actually work as it should.
I also lost about half a stone without trying as I was unable to snack 😂

Pinkroom · 27/02/2024 16:24

Thank you all!
Great tip about changing to new aligner before bed, I will be doing that!
It's going to be tough at work not snacking but hopefully will do me some good 😂
Happy to hear the filing doesn't hurt too.
I did question the dentist how short the time given was, because I personally think my teeth are bloody awful and need a lot doing! But I'm no dentist and he did say he may be longer depending on how the teeth move.

2 years and counting… I was originally told 12-18 months but I’m on my third set of aligners due to my teeth not going in the right direction! On the home stretch now and the difference is amazing.

I change mine every 10 days. Initially told 25 but I wasn't happy so I'm number 34 of 40. Buttons changed every time I got my next load. Didn't like the filing. Found it painful but I have sensitive teeth.

Following! Have my consultation next week.

NorthernSpirit · 28/02/2024 13:30

I’m on Invisalign Lite - 14 trays with bi weekly changes.

I have 21 attachments (funny how they don’t mention these)!

I’m now on my last tray (tray 14).

Bi weekly changes are the norm from what I’ve read & forums I follow. A week is a short time to be changing - the gums & bone need time to shift & set.

Are you going to an orthodontist rather than dentist? Orthodontists are the experts.

I’m really happy with my results & wish I had done it sooner!

TheBunyip · 28/02/2024 13:34

mine were an initial 16 weeks, and i had a further set for 4 weeks, so 20 all in. i can't believe how much my teeth have changed and i wish i'd done this years ago(well i would have done if i'd have been able to afford it)

i hated the buttons, thought it looked like i had bits of food stuck on my teeth, but tbh no one noticed them even when i pointed them out

oh also i changed them every week after the first few trays. some were more uncomfortable than others but none hurt really.

CariT · 28/05/2024 12:03

Hi I’ve finished my 20 trays (fortnightly change) and had wires top n bottom of front teeth, returned last week for my ‘night retainers’! Informed I’m to wear (at least) 6 months daily too!! Grr these are thicker than original retainers and cause me to lisp/swollen tongue at sides.

I’ve kept to schedule this last week but wonder if others are finding the same issues? My dentist said it’s to keep the arch of teeth in line in the jaw! Thought wires would do that! Any further advice pls??
