Never-ending cough

Now into week 4 of an incessant cough (which could be COVID I guess) and just about losing my mind. I'm not only coughing, I also feel rough as shit and am off work. Basically too ill to leave the house or really to do anything at home apart from a bit of mindless telly.

Is it ever going to get better???

I've been checked over by the GP and have a course of antibiotics, but they're doing very little even though I'm 4/5 of the way through now.

And to make matters worse I live alone and am losing £££ as I can't work.

It's not life-or-death (I don't think), but I can't stand this much longer.

Any advice?

flatpack1 · 27/02/2024 07:52

I have it. Didn't bother with the antibiotics as it's viral so they won't touch it. Am a SAHM mum so trying to get on as usual but head like cotton wool!

No, but the cough medicine I do have is barely touching it.

There's no "whooping", as far as I'm aware.

Well the GP did think it had developed into a chest infection and the antibiotics seem to have loosened things a little. But yes, that's why I didn't bother to go until I was approaching three weeks.

I had a cough/chest infection for 7 weeks at the end of last year. I had two courses of antibiotics and steroids. The steroids did help but the gave me the wrong antibiotics the first time. My husband had it for 5.5 weeks. It was an absolute bastard of an illness. I do often get a long lasting chest infection once a year but this really clung on for dear life.

Maybe see your go again and ask about steroids, though I tend to get them as I have asthma.

Sorry but I’m now into week 6 and it’s not improving! Had a chest xray and should get results later this week. I’m starting to think mine might be whooping cough. I do gasp with a big cough bout.

Same thing happened to my husband. He eventually coughed up blood and went to see the GP. He got 2 courses of antibiotics, 2*3 days of steroids, and 2 x rays. It did get better, although slowly. So my advice is to finish this course of antibiotics and go to see the GP again if the cough is still lingering.

These replies are not filling me with joy!

The cough, while definitely not cured, is a bit better than it was and I'd rather avoid steroids if possible.

I’m week 6, and it’s largely better during the day, but I start coughing early evening and through the night. It’s exhausting.

I’m also ravenous and really twitchy - I can’t settle to anything, my concentration is completely shot.

caringcarer · 27/02/2024 22:27

My adult DS has it too. First time he's been unwell for over 6 years. He's had a cough for over a month. He took a week off at the beginning when he had the temperature and was shivering. Then he just can't shake off the cough. I've got him 3 boxes of cough and cold capsules. He's had ibuprofen and paracetamol. He said it's worse when he lies down at night.

ColouringPencils · 27/02/2024 22:29

I have lost track, think I may be on week 6 or 7! Had one course of steroids as I am asthmatic, and they seemed to help, but the cough has come back again, although not as badly. The days are now not too bad, but I am still waking up coughing or gasping for breath every night. It just feels like it is never-ending.

purplecorkheart · 27/02/2024 22:38

I had this. Randomly a dry cough day time but with mucus cough in the morning. It stayed for weeks after getting a bad cold before Christmas. I eventually got a cough mixture that was for Phelgm. Benylin was the brand I got. I found it worked really well for me.

Ndemikwa · 27/02/2024 22:40

Omg sounds like same cough I have been having since October 2023, after all test and x ray and doses of antibiotics. Just 2 weeks ago it's turned out was asthma you should ask your GP to check out about asthma just in case also ask for Lungs test of asthma apparently you can get asthma we can get asthma when we are older
