Bring back public safety adverts!

Following on from another thread about the annoyance that people tailgating brings, made me reminisce about adverts from the 80s, like "only a fool breaks the two second rule"...

Why did they stop I wonder? And would there be any benefit in bringing them back?!

I know twerp drivers would likely remain twerp drivers, but in my head catchy adverts would help!!

And they could bring out new ones, like looking up from your phone when crossing the road... "look up from your screen, or be a has been..." 😂

Any other suggestions?!

Wow! I remember nearly all of these!

I recently did a speed awareness course and I thought a few bits on there could be a public broadcast.

Also, a public broadcast in how to avoid condensation would be amazing!!!

I misread post and thought it said public broadcasting on how to avoid constipation... A menacing toilet......

Dancing prunes and syrup of Figs anyone?

Danger of water would be really useful. We lost a local lad just a few days ago in a reservoir. I know you can't prevent all accidents and kids being kids or teens but cold water shock awareness would be good. And about ice. I know Enid Blyton is rightly much maligned for various aspects of her ouvre but she was great on Danger and ice being a peril not to walk on. Bteween her and the 70's TV ads I seem to have become very risk averse : )

#Float to live
RNLI do a good film on this.

I used to love the SPLAAT videos we watched at school in the early 90s! My mum didn’t let me watch scary stuff and these for me were like mini horror films 🤦‍♀️😂 one was about train tracks, another building sites I found them terrifying yet fascinating although I did have a few nightmares about train tracks after that one. We all
got a ruler with ‘splaat - safe play at all times ‘ on it too so each time we had maths and I used that I remembered how not to die

I've just discovered a new one. Apparently it was shown in cinemas, it is not for the faint hearted.

Before watching have a read https://pif.fandom.com/wiki/Southwark_Council_-_Sunday_Lunch

Oh and just to go off topic, who has fish fingers for Sunday lunch?

That is one of the first that comes to my mind when I think of more recent ones that are tackling more current issues (such as gun crime). It is very well done, and sticks with you for a long time.

The British Transport Police did one about the dangers of messing about on/near train tracks (still an issue even today... I remember similar in the 80s) that showed actual CCTV footage of near misses, and finishes with someone actually getting hit by a train.

I’d like to see signs on roundabouts reminding people to indicate their intentions.

NoodieRoodie · 28/02/2024 22:26

I can't believe no-one has mentioned Robbie! He cut across the train tracks, either to retrieve a football or get to a football match, his boot laces got caught in the tracks. He wasn't killed but the close proximity as the train passed by broke every bone in his body and this was emphasised by him being in a wheelchair with his boots hanging off the handles.

I casually mentioned something to my children as we walked near the railway bridge at the bottom of our garden. This was probably about 6/7 years ago and when we got home they pestered my so I found it in YouTube, then realised how bloody inappropriate it was! They were 6,4 and 2 and became a firm family favourite for several months 🙈

There's an anti-smoking advert on at the moment, a bride at her wedding reception reading out a message from her father, who is dying from lung cancer. It's very upsetting but may just make some people think again.

Charley says 'Don't talk to strangers'. 😂

Shinyandnew1 · 28/02/2024 23:05

Completely agree!

Fernticket · 28/02/2024 23:17

There was a DVD available at one time called "Charley Says", featuring most of the old favourites eg, the lonely water one. Some were funny and some plain scary!

Perhaps there should be an episode of Bing where he messes about with Hoppity on an escalator instead of listening to Flop and is torn to rabbity pieces at the bottom.

Please!!

We had a "firework lady" come into school just before every bonfire night and show us videos of children getting their hands blown off by fireworks! We loved it. I will also never fly a kite near to a pylon.

I went down a youtube rabbit hole watching some of these a couple of years ago and felt suitably warned all over again!

In Ireland they have "The temperature may hit 24° this week, so be sure to stay in the shade and watch out for your elderly neighbours" and "Many fridges are fuller than usual after Christmas. Make sure they are still functioning to adequately chill your turkey meat."

These were on the radio, not TV.

Edited

While undoubtedly sensible information, these seem lacking in the Or Else factor.

Unlike the Northern Irish headlights campaign (imagine a softly threatening Belfast growl): 'Use your lights. Or it's lights out ... for you!'
