Could you live next door to a puppy farm (if you're an animal lover)

I'm hoping for some opinions regarding this situation please. We're currently looking for a new home (renting - with a sensible budget for our area), we've been looking for 4 months. We have found multiple houses we like and have applied for however due to the state of the market we have not been the chosen tenants....due entirely to the state of the market in our area and 10+ people applying for each house.

The one time we were the chosen tenant the landlord died and the house was no longer available - sadly not making this up.

We went to see yet another house today - the area isn't the best, obviously we knew that in advance and are happy to compromise, the house ticked some of the boxes. It's a nice house, top of our budget (and not worth that compared to others) but nice enough.....however, there is a puppy farm in the neighbours garden.

My heart sunk when I looked out of the window and saw it. We went to the end of the garden, level with the "puppy" area, to check and it is very obviously puppies/dogs there. We don't think we can live next to it. Everytime I look out of the window I think It will make me angry!

We also have a dog, he would undoubtedly react to the noises, at least to start with!

Are we being Muppets for turning this house down given the current market?

Report the puppy farm to the RSPCA would be the obvious first thing to do.

No I couldn't. We have a travellers camp close to us and yesterday we drove by and there was some huge contraption being delivered with numerous tiny cages one on top of another, like a wooden construction of small cages and I just wondered what poor creatures were going to be locked up/ bred in them and it played on my mind all day worrying about it. I guess it depends what it is though - we got our puppy from a breeder who had a separate block in the garden for the puppies but it was roomy and light and airy and dogs all looked well cared for, but aware others are a lot worse than this.

@MaloneMeadow already on it...don't worry (for what good they are)! I detest animal cruelty, neglect, puppy farms... anything of the sort with a passion and am not afraid to make it known.

Exactly. Not sure the RSPCA do much. I have reported this traveller site for various cruelties - huge grown men riding / racing tiny shetland ponies down the road etc but nothing ever seems to get done.

@Babyroobs sadly this was an overgrown rabbit hutch, long but only about 4ft high with no visible glow from a heat source (not to say there isn't one of course in the covered bit) there was also a lot of racket when we walked to the end of the garden so clearly used.

Sounds awful x

I want you to live there just to help the poor things☹️ Sorry, not helpful. I absolutely detest animal cruelty & puppy farms are utterly disgusting. Then they turf them out once they’ve made their money & they end up at Many Tears🥲🥲

I would report (not that I think much will be done) & not move there, it will be too upsetting.

Zoologydragon · 26/02/2024 21:24

@Babyroobs they do nothing/very little for horses unless it's a huge case with tons of publicity. I actually rescue and rehab horses and previously got blackmailed by the RSPCA to go to court against a person who had the neighbouring land in a case about one horse and her foal - I offered my entire cache of evidence about him, including pics, on the proviso they did something about the other 11 horses who were suffering. They refused, gave me 4 hours to think about it and said they wouldn't treat the mare unless I'd go to court (this would put me, my grazing and my horses at risk)

Within this time, the owner paid them off the mare was put down and the 3 month old foal was returned to him. He then weaned the foal and her 2 half siblings 2 days later by leaving them I. The field (neighbouring mine) and walking the mares to a field 3 miles away.

I fund raised and bought all 3 foals from him myself. I still have them as I was in the field within an hour of each being born and couldn't possibly part with them.

The owner has since been in a number of other RSPCA interventions and they never do anything at all. Even when one of the horses was shredded half to bits by barbed wire and ended up losing her life!

I am far from loaded I hasten to add.

You might do better reporting to hmrc if you’ve got enough info.Possibly the council as well

Bearpawk · 26/02/2024 21:35

Genuine question and I hope this isn't inflammatory but do you know it's a puppy farm?
My family kept (working) dogs in kennels and every couple of years or so we'd have a litter (not from the same dogs of course) I wonder if that could have looked like a puppy farm to an outsider !

Zoologydragon · 26/02/2024 21:45

@Bearpawk I understand completely - in the area this house was in there is little chance they were working dogs. I completely appreciate you asking and know exactly what you mean but this is a different sort of set up.

The house is in a questionable estate (no judgement here) and there was an area at the back with these overgrown rabbit hutches in for the width of the garden, clearly at least 2 separate set ups but possibly more. There was an area fenced off that ran for about 5 ft in front of these hutches and also puppy proof fenced.

When we looked out of the window I actually commented that they must have rabbits or something when the estate agent mentioned she has seen dogs out there. When we went into the garden we could clearly hear them. Obviously completely fine if done safely and humanely.

Just to reiterate I've reported to the LA and RSPCA

There's one in our village, reported repeatedly. But they're travellers and nothing happens. I can hear them barking non stop when I'm out walking mine and it breaks my bloody heart. I couldn't be closer to it.

Cherrysoup · 26/02/2024 22:25

Absolutely couldn’t, no. It’s putting me massively off moving to a certain county in Wales because there’s a high concentration of puppy farms, it disgusts me that the Welsh government allows this.
