What do you do about a minor injury tha makes commuting difficult?

I've got a hamstring tear, physio has said rest and some very light stretching for at least a week or two. Lots of ice.

My commute involves a total 5 miles of walking, to and from the station at each end.

I can do it, if I allow extra time, but really don't want to set my recovery back. I can work from home a bit, but not everyday and I've got a really busy week this week, really need to be in everyday.

The only option I can see is black cabs, but that's £££. I'm just going to have to do it and suffer?

Do you have Bolt/Uber where you live?

I take it there's no practical bus service.

Is there anyone you know or a colleague who does the same commute and could give you a lift?

Would cycling be an option?

Do they have hire escooters near you? That would be easier on the hamstrings than walking

Well, you have a couple of options:

  • WFH, do your meetings via video call or reschedule them for next week or later
  • ask your employer if they would cover additional travel expenses to enable you to get to work while you recover (the alternative is sick leave which means they'd have to pay you not to work, so...!)

And in the longer term maybe think about backup options in case you have more injuries or need more recovery time. Would gentle cycling be easier on your hamstring for example, could you take a bike on the train?

Are any of the above suggestions do able? Could a neighbour/friend drop you off and someone else or taxi drop you home? Join a car share app.

I would rearrange my schedule so I could work some of those days from home and I would get a cab or a lift from a friend to the station on the other days.

You can talk to work and say it's hard for you to get in so need to work from home.

If they want you to go in then they may offer to pay for a taxi.
