How do you store your china?

As in - plates and bowls?

For many years now we've had a very motley collection of Ikea tableware. It was nice enough when we got it, however over time so many have been broken, and a lot of what was left has chipped edges...

It had come to the point where we didn't have enough of anything (particuarly when we have visitors) and I was embarrassed by the state of the chipped plates and bowls I did have to serve people with... so I have purchased a lovely 32 piece set of big plates, small plates, cereal, and pasta bowls. Eight place settings!! My excitement knows no bounds! 😆

However I do wonder if the way we stored out old china didn't help with the longevity of it. We have a big deep drawer under our hob and all the china lives in there, stacked by type (so a stack of plates, a stack of bowls, etc).

We are also a relatively heavy-handed/clumsy bunch, so what might not help!

How does everyone else store their tableware? Is there a better way? Or do we just need to learn to be less clumsy?

My crockery just goes in a cupboard on the wall in the kitchen

BIossomtoes · 26/02/2024 15:38

We stack ours in a cupboard. I thought everyone did.

OlderandwiserMaybe · 26/02/2024 15:44

I have a plate rack which i chose when i re-did the kitchen a couple of years ago. I love it - makes the plates mote accessible IMO. Bowls go in a drawer like you'e described.

Stacked in a cupboard, I can't think of where else we would keep it.

I have no idea, the housekeeper takes care of such things 😁

I have a drawer like you. But I have one of the internal pinboard things to hold each style of china safe.

i also set it up so that there was room to get each style in and out without bashing into the one next door.

Just stacked in the cupboard. We use it every day along with the silver cutlery.

They probably do to be fair, I am prone to overthinking!
I was just wondering about a rack or something? But not sure how practical that sort of thing would be, or if it would make a difference to possible damage. Or if there was something I perhaps hadn't considered...

We have limited cupboard space and ours were getting bashed so I have rehomed (and keep telling myself I will refurbish…) my parents old sideboard and use that to store crockery.

gingercat02 · 26/02/2024 16:57

Just stacked in a cupboard. I think the dishwasher chips things rather than us

CheerfulBardo · 26/02/2024 16:59

On a dresser. Small plates and bowls stacked, dinner plates propped against the back ‘wall’ of the dresser.

NotMeNoNo · 26/02/2024 17:06

In a cupboard with a riser to double stack plates. Previously we had those in-drawer holders.

The thing is, with a matching set, you don't sort through pulling out different plates, you just put on or take off the top of the stack.

Also, I have Denby plates so they don't chip easily regardless so the above may be no help!

We have a cupboard in the dining room for the special stuff, our everyday stuff is in a cupboard in the kitchen.

Toblerbone · 26/02/2024 17:10

We have a deep drawer with the internal pinboard thing like @TrishTrix.

I'd love a sideboard, but it would be a bit of a squeeze in our kitchen/diner and not really something I have the funds for at the moment. I often daydream about it though!
Although now I'm wondering about some sort of plate shelf... if such a think exists...!

Ooh, this seems like something to look into.

I'm not actually sure that the drawer we use to store the china is actually robust enough (it's quite heavy and the drawer has been struggling for a while, even with the old bits in it!) so I've currently rearranged a cupboard shelf to put half of it in there... but it's not ideal as difficult to get stuff out. I'm going to look into this riser business... thank you.

It really does! I wish we had the space.

Lovely!

I have a plastic version of this for my posh plates and saucers in a pan drawer. It's great though not the full width of the 1m drawer but actually that means we can store the matching cups to the side. It was nowhere near as expensive as this wooden beauty.

If crockery is stoneware it's far more susceptible to chipping than porcelain.

I store our tableware in a cupboard with dividers to keep things separated. I also use cushioned shelf liners to prevent chipping. We try to be careful, but accidents happen!
