What *really* works for dark circles under eyes?

Hey MN!

As he's getting a bit older, my husband is getting dark circles under his eyes, regardless of his sleep levels. A few (idiot) people have mentioned it to him, (you look tired! Etc). So he's becoming a bit self-conscious about it.

It's not an issue I have so I don't know what to recommend. If you have this problem, is there a cream that really helps, or a vitamin that you take etc?

What can I suggest that will actually help?

Concealer is the only thing that works for mine!!

EightMonthsScared · 26/02/2024 11:13

I think he'll balk at actual make-up but I do wonder if I can convince him to use a cc cream or something.

That could give him an immediate lift without being like proper make up.

Some fillers / injectable treatments can give really good results if he wants to go down that route.

If he wants to start slowly, a good hydrating under eye cream and perhaps some under eye patches to use at home can help "plump" and hydrate the skin? Then he can venture into anything like concealer if he fancies.

Mrsjayy · 26/02/2024 11:24

I had a vit c under eye cream that was fab but I left it in a hotel and I've forgotten the brand as it was in a gift set. anyway vit c lightens the skin I think

Chypre · 26/02/2024 11:26

If that is just the issue of looking tired/older, try introducing him to under-eye patches. Dark shadows under eyes can also be a sign of kidney problems and other conditions however.

Terfosaurus · 26/02/2024 11:31

Vitamin C eye gel. I just use the Boots own twice a day. It's made a real difference.

ChimChimeny · 26/02/2024 11:32

I've had them since my teens regardless of sleep/hydration. I use concealer and wearing glasses to hide mine!
I use the creAm everyday too but I've resigned to having them forever
But I'm going to try the vit c cream suggested above

Beetroot juice helps apparently - applied on the skin. I'm planning to try it myself as I have an event later this week.

AnnaKing81 · 26/02/2024 11:42

Filler

Filler

how does that work though if you have darker pigmentation doesn't the filler just fill that out and it will be noticed?

SweetClintonMoments · 26/02/2024 11:58

People are moving away from fillers particularly under eyes. Do not recommend them.
It depends on what is causing his under eyes darkness: genetics, pigmentation, terrible diet, unhealthy kidney and liver, allergies, anemia..
I would have a full health MOT and check if his biological family is aging that way too or just him.
Assuming all is well, There are laser trearments but nothing is guaranteed.

I'll give this a try.

I had Soap and Glory puffy eye attack gel patches in my advent calendar. I was sceptical as nothing usually works on me and I have really sensitive skin and eyes, but they worked really well and I will buy again. I think you can also buy the actual gel in a pot to use daily.

Mumof1andacat · 26/02/2024 12:21

I've had them since about aged 10. I think with some people they just show more

madeinmanc · 26/02/2024 13:20

The issue with filler is it can initially look good but later it can migrate down the face, I believe.

There is fat transfer to the under eye area, but the fat may be reabsorbed, I'm really not sure on the success rate but it does interest me.

I also read about a laser that's come out in America but I can't find the name for now. I'll try and find it and update. None of these are cheap options, though.

CupOfCoffeeandaPineappleChunk · 26/02/2024 13:36

Tear trough/ Under eye filler is no longer recommended due to the high chances of both granuloma, formulation and migration, potentially causing bags known as festoons or Malar bags. There is a superficial treatment where by Micro needles penetrate the upper dermal layers and inject vitamin supplements, which have an overall brightening impact on the skin. Micro needles penetrate the upper dermal layers and inject vitamin supplements, which have an overall brightening impact on the skin.it is a form of mesotherapy which is a very long established and tested technique. A cosmetic Doctor or very good practitioner will advise on this and suitability. It is quite a good solution but relatively expensive.
Vitamin c preparations can be highly irritant to some people but are a brightening product so worth trying with caution.

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 26/02/2024 13:38

I’ve also had them since being a kid but now in my 40s are better than ever due to drinking lots of water and going alcohol free…

On a bad day I wear my glasses

Soowoo · 26/02/2024 13:42

Drinking lots of water helps with my dark circles - I think they are a sign of dehydration.

pokebowls · 26/02/2024 14:24

Dark circles can be hyperpigmentation of the actual skin or it can be thinning skin which becomes more translucent so blood vessels make the area appear darker.

You need to know which it is to know what might help.

Do these work for the dark colouring or just the puffiness/bags? I don’t really have bags, just shadows and it seems harder to find products for the shadows (other than make up)
