I feel like I had the worst sleep ever last night, I must’ve slept a little but it doesn’t feel like it. In the office for a full day ahead…. I don’t drink coffee…. Help me stay awake?!!

Sugar. Not ideal but it works …

Rubbishconfession · 26/02/2024 08:56

I've done this many times. It's fine as long as the lack of sleep doesn't carry on for days.

Maybe get an energy drink?

Is it an office based job, could you take a lunch time nap? Or is it customer facing all day?

Do you have a heavy day ahead?

campamshamalam · 26/02/2024 08:58

Don't eat a big lunch or grab sugary snacks as you will get a high but crash. Eat smaller snacks more often, protein is best.
Get a banana this morning.
Drink plenty of water.
Do the basic minimum of work but fake being busy. Pretend to be in the phone if you can't be bothered interacting with people. Go and sit in the toilet for a few minutes when you feel like your eyes are closing. Walk around to keep yourself awake

Cloud44 · 26/02/2024 08:58

I grabbed some lucozade on the way out the door, not sure if that will help?!!

Put an elastic on your wrist and keep pulling it away and snapping it.

Sugar will send you into a slump so you can only try that towards the end of the day, and only if you’re not driving.

if you won’t drink coffee, you’re left with pain, so keep snapping that elastic.

Not public facing but in an open plan office so going to have to take being busy I think! Manager sits opposite me……

Is s/he going to be there all day? Could you check their diary and time a nap with a long meeting of theirs?

SomersetTart · 26/02/2024 09:02

Drink lots of water. Have snacks. Have a nap in the loo at lunchtime.

nc42day · 26/02/2024 09:04

Drink lots of water, you need to avoid sugar crashes, eat well, don't overdo the carbs. Just try and do the hour you're in, chop it up into sections mentally, so the first mission is to get through to 11am, then lunch, then 3pm etc. Don't push yourself too hard, the idea is to cruise through it.

If you can go somewhere quiet, and just close your eyes for half an hour at lunch time do, but set an alarm in case you drop off, and bonus points if you can do a legs up the wall yoga pose for ten mins, but you'll need a locked door for that unless you work somewhere fairly understanding.

doppelgangermirror · 26/02/2024 09:07

Power through then have a cat nap somewhere quiet at lunch if you can.

Rubbishconfession · 26/02/2024 09:07

We have a first aid room with a bed and sofa. I have taken many a nap there.

When someone else comes I always spring up and tell them I'm better and they can have the room.

MabelMaybe · 26/02/2024 09:08

Keep moving, and get decent snacks at your break and lunch

TheDowagerDoughnut · 26/02/2024 09:08

Fresh air and water - as regularly as you can.

Funkyslippers · 26/02/2024 09:11

Purdeys energy drink doesn't contain caffeine and I find them really good. Sainsbury's sell them if you can get out

Cloud44 · 26/02/2024 09:13

Thank you everyone - it’s going to be a long day 🙈

Food. The only way I can do this is to keep eating and drinking.

Dweetfidilove · 26/02/2024 09:27

Plenty water, non-sugary snacks, lots of fresh air breaks if you can.

Hopefully you’ll get a good sleep tonight.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 26/02/2024 09:28

I'm like this today, only I have 3 meetings, 1 of which is 2.5 hours long. Ugh. Face to face as well.

Echobelly · 26/02/2024 09:33

If I really have to go in after an awful night I'll take pro-plus tablets, they do help you get through.

Eat when you're hungry and be kind to yourself!

Sorry you're having to face this but you're not alone and wishing you a better night tonight

campamshamalam · 26/02/2024 09:39

Some workplaces are much more professional than mine clearly. I actually work in a 'big job' if this was me I'd just tell my manager I had a bad night and I'm laying down on my desk for a while or I'd lay in a side office. She would probably just laugh. You can't be productive if you're exhausted and research shows that people only work productively a small amount of time they are actually in the office. Yet bosses never get this memo.

campamshamalam · 26/02/2024 09:40

Just to clarify I mean head down on desk. Would look pretty unhinged if I suddenly laid flat out on my desk

beguilingeyes · 26/02/2024 10:02

Pro Plus

ButtCheeks · 26/02/2024 10:05

Lots of water and a bit of sugar. You’ll be fine! I’ve gone to works loads on no sleep. It’s not as terrible as you think. Don’t nap though—it messes with your sleep the next night.

Cloud44 · 26/02/2024 10:05

Good luck @Babysharkdoodoodood !

I used to have a manager who had a "power nap" at her desk every lunchtime. We were in a shared office (4 of us) and she'd literally close her eyes whilst sitting bolt upright, instantly fall asleep, and then 15 minutes later she'd be wide awake, refreshed and ready for the afternoon. I'd love to be able to do that but I can't sleep unless I'm in bed. I've even had overnight flights where I've sat wide awake all night absolutely shattered whilst everyone else sleeps around me.

But to the OP, if you can't manage a nap somewhere, I think fresh air is the next best thing - try and get a 5 minute walk outside a few times.
