Not long ago I was awoken at 3am by loud banging outside. It sounded like someone was banging on my window. I went to look and I saw three men with baseball bats hitting a car in the middle of the road. The car was revving and then I saw another man run out of the opposite house with a huge machete and a big ruckus ensued. I was absolutely terrified as I had visions of people breaking into houses.
I called the police and an armed unit came. There was chaos with people running and shouting. Police with rifles and dogs. Helicopters with beams going for hours.
I was really shaken for weeks. This was in south London so I guess not too surprising but I've never seen anything like it before.
Have you ever witnessed something horrible?

Was that in Mitcham?

I saw someone punch a guy in the back of the head with no warning at a nightclub. Such a cowardly thing to do.

OnlyYellowRoses · 25/02/2024 13:17

Working as a carer, a chap I looked after was alcohol dependent, he ruptured his own throat whilst vomiting (common in those with long term issues with alcoholism) and covered me, him and his whole front room in bright red blood. Then promptly keeled over and I had to do CPR. He survived though but that sticks with me.

I also (same job) once saw a lady vomit up her own faeces due to a bowel obstruction.

Found a man dead on rounds in the community, the blue colour of his skin and the open eyes took me ages to get out of my mind.

Urgh that's awful. No, it was in Croydon.

I witnessed a mugger on a bike stab a young woman in the back and grab her bag. Broad daylight in east London about 20 years ago.

It was such unnecessary violence as he was a big guy on a bike and could’ve got her bag without stabbing her.

I called the police and ambulance and stayed with the woman until they arrived. She had almost lost consciousness by the time they got there - it was seriously distressing. The police later told me he had punctured her lung and she was lucky to survive. He was caught the same day, though, and had been wanted for other violent muggings of lone women (bastard).

I also witnessed a car hitting a guy about 10 years ago. I was driving behind the car that hit him. He was drunk and just walked out without looking and went up in this woman’s car and cracked her windscreen. He was very badly injured - I think he will have lost a leg - and me and some other witnesses stayed with him talking to him until the police and ambulance arrived. The driver was an elderly woman and was too shocked to get out of the car. It was awful.

Waking up to a weird sound to find my husband having a cardiac arrest. Then having to do cpr whilst he was going blue. (Emergency services arrived in minutes and he was eventually brought back).

sprigatito · 25/02/2024 13:24

My mother force-feeding my autistic little brother his own vomit while screaming at him and battering him around the head. I'll never forget the terrified look in his eyes.

Or possibly the months of "holding therapy" she subjected him to where he was screaming and distressed for hours, to the point of soiling himself.

Closely rivalled to the homemade "treatments she imposed on my quadriplegic little sister, such as hanging her upside down from a doorframe to "stretch her hamstrings". She adopted these disabled kids and used them to gratify her raging ego, she was convinced she was going to cure them and be famous. She made my siblings and I help her perpetrate this shit on them as well. She's a massive arsehole.

Yes I've seen a few things like this where a tumour has ruptured the carotid and people have bled to death. I saw lots of horrible things as 15 years working in palliative care. Glad I have changed careers now.

That’s truly chilling. I’m so sorry this happened to your family.

I saw a man glasses in the face in a quiet bar. Went for a quick drink after work with a colleague and there was only us, a group of (what liked like) workmates, suited and booted at one table, and 2 guys at another table. Out of nowhere, one of the 2 guys got up, smashed a pint glass and stuck it in the face of one of the other group. He then ran for the door (which we were sitting beside) in a bit to leave but the victims friends caught him and stayed laying into him right in front of us. It was horrific! It was such a shock as there had been no argument or even any interaction between the 2 tables before the incident. It all happened so fast and I felt genuinely traumatised and shaken for ages afterwards. I hate violence, it turned my stomach.

StepIntoMyOffice · 25/02/2024 13:28

Glassed, not glasses.

Oh no. Both of those situations are so tragic.

My 17 year old ds witnessed his 16 year old friend mowed down by a driver speeding at 64mph in a 40 zone. Friend died a few hours later in hospital. It was an awful time.

That's horrific. They must have had some history between them do that. Or maybe not. There are genuine psychopaths out there. So scary.

I saw a young boy who’d drowned being pulled from a swimming pool. That image will stay with me for the rest of my life.

flapjackfairy · 25/02/2024 14:19

when I was a child out shopping with my mother a windowcleaner fell off his ladder and landed on the pavement right in front of us. He died later of his injuries.
I also witnessed rioting football fans throwing bottles and fighting as a small kid and to this day groups of men talking loudly freaks me out. I hate violence !

LeSoleil · 25/02/2024 14:23

I was the first car arriving to a car accident where an A road crossed a dual carriageway. This was before barriers or roundabouts became more commonplace. It was an early summer morning in Lincolnshire over 40 years ago. There was a couple in (or out of) each car and all four appeared dead. The police and ambulances arrived ten minutes later. I never heard anything further. What a waste due to an accidental mis-judgment or lapse of concentration.
