Fish fingers, Omega 3 vs Standard Fish Fingers (FF), whats the difference other than price?

Hi

A couple of years back, we changed from the Birdseye cod FF to the Omega 3 purely on the fact Omega 3 was supposed to be good for you. There was a little bonus, ie cheaper.

However, now, IMO they taste difference ie poss too much Omega 3. But the price difference when you include offers is substainal as we often buy everything on offer in several packets.

We can easily afford the ones without Omega 3 but are prudent with our money and as importantly, rightly or wrongly feel Omega 3 has additional health benefits

Examples of price in link below - Omega 3 a 30 pack, 500p Vs Standard Birdseye FF, 30 @ 775p - just an example but these are always a lot more expensive and I eat about 20 a week.
Please help (I've spent 10 mins on Google but non the wiser)

Have you looked at the ingredients and the nutritional content on each packet? That's where you'll find it

Correlation · 25/02/2024 13:11

I think the omega 3 ones are pollock rather than cod so that's why they are cheaper.

Yes.

They brand them Omega 3 because they think that sounds better than pollock.

Pollock is naturally higher in Omega 3 than cod.

Yes, it's the type of fish. Pollock is, I presume, naturally higher in Omega 3. It's also far more plentiful than haddock or cod so cheaper.
I have a bit of an ethical dilemma about fish I must say. Haddock and cod have been hugely over fished so are in decline, but more plentiful fish like pollock and basa involve a lot more food miles and will presumably go the same way as other species if we're not careful. It's hard to know what's best.

Many thanks to all, sincerely appreciated.

I think we will stick with the Pollocks, lol. But in
all seriousness, if they do contain the higher content as cod hardly contains it, then we will remain with Omega 3.

Qiet a few of the people we know buy fish/cod or haddock on Fridays ie fish n chips thinking the fish is good for them - but I have told them, its better than red meat but that is about it.

Pollock (whiting I believe) plentiful around our shores, my late dad used to catch it when I was a kid. Bass too before it was trendy but I'm not sure Basa is that but it sounds marketable!

Comefromaway · 25/02/2024 13:26

I personally don’t like the taste of pollock so will always go for cod if possible, but yes, it’s a cheaper fish.

Parrotseatthemall · 25/02/2024 13:35

Just asked googled and more confused...what used to be called Coley has a Latin name Pollochius!

chattyness · 25/02/2024 13:41

For me it's the taste, pollock is yuk & they taste like the skin is either still on or mixed in with them which I can't bear the fish oily flavour of. I buy cod or haddock fillets cut them up and breadcrumb or batter them myself ,as ready made cod fish fingers are just too expensive for the tiny amount you get.

yes this, they do taste different I just buy cod although I prefer Youngs to Bird's-eye

greenacrylicpaint · 25/02/2024 13:48

a better concience?
honestly, normal fish fingers are fine on occasion. they are not exactly healthfood but are good as part of a healthy diet.

tomago · 25/02/2024 13:50

I thought cod stocks were running low so the pollock ones are probably better

Blaggingit123 · 25/02/2024 13:50

I always spend more for the cod ones as the pollock ones are slightly grey fish and my kids won’t touch them…

Pollock is generally caught in the North Pacific. I think it's from the same family as whiting but not actually the same fish. Basa is from South East Asia and is not related to bass as all it's a type of catfish. It's cheap, and excellent in fish curries.I use it quite a lot but always feel a bit guilty when I see "produce of Viietnam" on the packet. They are both plentiful currently, but then so were haddock and cod when I was a child. Hopefully the fishing industry has learned something in the interim.

You eat 20 fish fingers a week? You must really love them! Grin

Parrotseatthemall · 25/02/2024 15:54

Noting the 'Alaskan Pollock' is a different breed to the Pollock my dad caught in the English Channel. I remember enjoying Huss (aka dogfish Rock salmon) as a kid but as they were bottom dwellers some didn't taste as good as others. There is a family photo of a cod almost the size of my brother Dad caught. Cod was much thicker and meatier before it was overfished. The oily/fishy taste has always varied though. Guess it proves fish fingers are real fish at least

DistingusedSocialCommentator · 26/02/2024 12:02

Re 20 fishfingers - lol. I cut back on the bangers and feel these were a lot more healthy. My OH asks me how come I don't get fed up with them
