Futureproofing jobs and ADHD

I love my work at the moment, a part-time home-based copywriter. I’ve got ADHD and have been a total flop in office jobs I’ve had in the past, only ever lasting a few weeks or months because I can’t cope with the clocking in and out mentality; at home I work when I’m most functional and can work really efficiently, leaving me the rest of the day to look after the house, children, animals and other errands and jobs that come with a family (I know plenty of people have full time jobs and manage this but I can’t, believe me, previous attempts led to severe poor mental health episodes).

It’s clear that most if not all writing work will be done by AI soon, so what could I retrain as or focus on to ensure I still have an income? I’m intelligent, numerate and capable, but my ADHD means I massively struggle if it’s someone else’s 9-5 timetable and office work means I’m completely distracted. In an ideal
world, it would be at home, 15-20 hours a week, 20k a year. Will any job like that exist in five years time? As I said, fine to retrain.

TIA x

If you are a good copywriter; you’ll be fine. Honestly. AI writing is not great, and it’ll improve, but it’ll never be human. There will always be jobs for people to edit/check/rewrite; and to be honest, I can’t see half of copywriter jobs disappearing within my lifetime. There’s massive issues around ownership/copyright/source materials; as well as the fact AI can’t easily verify sources and often makes things up.

I think AI is a little way off replacing you. I am taking the view that i might as well learn how go use AI to speed up my work rate. So far the AI suggestions have not been workable but have triggered a thought process when i have hit a wall of 'where now'

Really do you think? I don’t know if AI will replace professional copywriters - I have started to use AI a lot in my job but it only gives you a starting point - the phrasing sounds like a computer and the facts can be incorrect. It’s a long way from replacing a person.

That’s really reassuring, thanks. Maybe I’m being pessimistic (or maybe you’re all too optimistic 😂) and maybe instead I need to think about optimising my earnings.

I love the variety of my work but the ADHD means I’ve never sorted out a website or proactively find jobs, so it’s all word of mouth and I probably end up with small clients who pay small because I don’t believe I can get the bigger work.

Are you formally diagnosed?

Have you looked into ADHD coaching or assistance through access to work?

It's been a great help to a friend on mine, they have a creative career but were struggling with the admin side of their job - access to work helped paid for an assistant to do those things for her.
You must have a formal diagnosis though to access this benefit.

Formally diagnosed a few years ago, wondered for years before that what was “wrong with me”.

Thanks, I’ll look into this. Can I still access this as a freelancer?
