What are the chances of us catching this mouse now?

On Thursday evening, our lovely cat took home a live mouse. We spent the night turning over furniture etc but we just couldn’t catch it.
Managed to set up a humane mouse trap last night with peanut butter and chocolate on a cracker inside it, but nothing. The last time we saw it was Thursday night.
Where the heck is it?? Could it have died somewhere and we just don’t know? Would very much like for it to not be in the house..

Blimey, is it really a rat? Have attached more photos. Just checked diameters of the trap -

Height: 6.7cm
Length: 18cm
Width: 13.5cm

Funnily enough I used to keep pet rats years ago and I certainly didn’t think it was one - but it could possibly be a baby one? It was really small, it would just fit into the palm of your hand if holding it.

Could it be a shrew?

Looks more like a mouse to me. Rats look weirdly scruffier in my experience.

We get brought gifts of mice quite frequently (most recent was a live one delivered to DD1's bedroom on Saturday morning 😂). My cleaning routine, which is admittedly quite lackadaisical, does not change. We're all fine 😁

Those new photos have changed my mind - the first photo the nose looked very ratty!

Wishiwasalittlebitsmaller · 27/02/2024 23:28

Field mouse I think?

The nose did look extremely long in that first pic, not sure why! We do live in an area where there are woods next to us, and fields outlying although further away from the houses.

I was googling different types of mice trying to figure out which one it was, out of curiosity! The third picture I attached is a good side view of it.

Definitely a mouse. We've got the same trap and woods next door. Our prolific hunting cats have been bringing us these live gifts for 20 years, sometimes at a rate of two a day in 'mouse season' which starts around February. Buy more traps.

It's a field mouse. Those kangaroo type legs mean they can really jump. Beware.

We've never caught any mouse borne diseases with normal household cleaning including a time when one took up residence in a seldom used kitchen drawer for a bit. It ate a bunch of wax birthday candles.

Buy more traps.

I'm also going with a field mouse.

notesandmemos · 28/02/2024 09:20

When I said we've got the same trap, I meant traps.

Did I say buy more traps?
