'Old washing powder foaming up more'

So my washing machine is causing electrics to trip. Happened before I knows its likely the element.

Told repair people this and model number. They turn up and run a cycle then show me that the drum is full of soapsuds. Said I've been using too much and that could be the issue. But I don't use much at all. I NEVER have soap laundry and NEVER have suds around the rim or inside at the end of the cycle.
Then they said is powder out of date because that makes it foam more. (WTAF?)

Because it sounds like rubbish I'm Wondering if they put something in it to make it foam but that seems far fetched

Am I paranoid or does this seem odd ?

A machine run on empty always looks more foamy because there's nothing in there to soak it up when it's got a lot of residue in the drawer, drum and internals. If you use too much, that is - fabric softener also froths up a bit.

Bullshit detector is going off slightly regarding the age of the powder (assuming you do mean powder and not liquid, which is foul stuff), but if it's the element all gunged up, that still needs replacing and you need to reduce the amount you use/do longer washes/do a maintenance wash regularly, whatever happens.

Thanks.
I will cut down but I really don't use much already. I'd read that soap powder manufacturers tell you to use more than needed. So I halve it usually

Must have been a build up

The old powder thing is really odd as you say

Ive been told exactly this! Well DH was told this as I was at work. I thought it sounded highly suspicious. The washing powder they saw was old because it was a box my mum had left. We don’t use it. Was it a Miele?
