Are you one of those people who never sit down?

Are you slim?
I'd like to become like that and I'm hoping it'll have a nice side effect of weight loss.

Not me but DH only stops to sleep. Even standing in one place he wobbles, always has. He’s slim. He sleeps when his head hits the pillow until morning. He also drinks an unhealthy amount of coffee. 😞

Bloomingdaffs · 23/02/2024 20:35

I used to work with someone who said she never sat down until about 10 o'clock after work. I often wondered if she just wandered about her house for hours.

Annymania · 23/02/2024 20:37

I’m one of those people who never get the f up 😂
my grandma is just like that though, constantly moving, can’t sit still, can’t watch a film, always wiping or dusting or something. We’ll be eating dinner and she’ll just get up to look for random objects lol. She’s 70 and slim (especially for her age), I think she’s always been like that, we always laugh about it

Ginmonkeyagain · 23/02/2024 20:43

@AskingQuestionsAgain I got in from work at 7pm and so far have out away clean dishes from this morning, had 20 mins of yoga practice, put on a wash, made a Thai green curry for dinner, put away some shopping, made up the bed, cleaned the top of the kitchen cupboards whilst I was waiting for the dinner to cook and checked a blocked drain outside to see if it is still overflowing.

I am rubbish at sitting and have a mind that leaps all over the place.

I used to know a couple of these - I found them exhausting. One would meet you at the door with a duster or J Cloth in her hand, saying she hadn’t sat down all day.
She was fat!

It’s particularly irritating if people tell you they never sit down, as if it’s some sort of virtue.
They’re often people who never read a book - would see it as a ‘waste of time’ - or at least that’s been my experience.

I rarely sit down but I'm a voracious reader. I read before bed, in the bath, whilst a passenger in any vehicle, during library time with my students, whilst eating if I'm alone, while cooking, in the car whilst waiting to collect DC and so on.

The other people I know who don't sit still a lot also read.

I don't see it as a virtue. It's a hindrance. I'm uptight and find it hard to switch off. It's who I am.

Waitingfordoggo · 24/02/2024 11:51

The vast majority of the time, I’m on my feet and moving about. I don’t get up particularly early but am usually up and about from about 8am till 8 or 9pm most days and I would rarely sit down during that time unless I’m driving (I drive quite a lot of shortish journeys for work). I can find it very hard to stay still, so I wouldn’t do well in a job that involved sitting or standing still for long periods.

But for a short period each week (usually Sunday mornings), I’ll enter sloth mode and be extremely lazy for several hours; lying down cuddling the dog and idling on my phone. I need that downtime but mostly I’m on the move and yes, I’m slim and have never been overweight.

Waitingfordoggo · 24/02/2024 11:52

To add: I do like reading books but only get round to it when we go on holiday, because I find it very hard to sit still and read a book at home (I don’t watch movies for the same reason- am distracted by housework tasks or suchlike after about half an hour).

AskingQuestionsAgain · 24/02/2024 12:02

@Waitingfordoggo what job do you do that allows you to move around?

Waitingfordoggo · 24/02/2024 13:04

I teach fitness classes and work in a gym, so always moving. I work mostly mornings and evenings so I’m often home for a few hours in the afternoons but will usually be walking the dog/preparing dinner/doing housework in that time.

NewName24 · 24/02/2024 15:25

I used to be, and I was, yes.

Always ate what I liked and never purposefully 'exercised' but was always busy doing something and rarely watched TV or 'just sat' for any purpose.

FizzyWizzyBubbles · 24/02/2024 15:30

I don't sit down until 9pm. Unless driving. I eat on the go. Or stood in kitchen as always doing something or other.
Im overweight!

BeaRF75 · 24/02/2024 15:32

God, no! I love sitting down - it's one of my best things 🤣 Everyone should sit down more often.

Muddywalks34 · 25/02/2024 11:21

I don’t sit down and as a result stay fairly slim size 8/10 despite eating a lot and drinking too much wine. I tend to average 20k steps a day through combination of dog walking, having horses and lots of pottering round the house. I will happily sit of an evening but just can’t do it during the day for more than 1/2 an hour.

ChristmasFluff · 25/02/2024 12:17

I'm naturally energetic, now work on my feet all day, walk at least 3 miles every day, quite often can't settle until all my little jobs are done, but am fat.

ViciousCurrentBun · 25/02/2024 12:23

I move a lot daytime but when my backside hits the sofa of an evening after dinner I’m not moving for anyone. DH sent me a meme of someone who watched an entire tv show they didn’t like because they couldn’t reach the tv control, I’m a bit like that. I’m also slim.

Octopus45 · 25/02/2024 16:50

I used to never sit down when my kids were young and was an 8/10 despite eating loads. As they've got older I have slowed down a bit, although I do usually manage my 10,000 steps a day cause I don't drive and I have a dog. I also do Get Fit with Rick workouts. I do find that its easier to keep my weight down if I'm moving more, but life gets in the way more these days. I'm also a stone a bit heavier and a size 10/12 now.

LoobyDop · 25/02/2024 17:02

God, no. I find people like that exhausting and stressful to be around, I’d hate to be one. I’m quite active but I need my recovery time, I couldn’t be on my feet all day every day. And I don’t think there’s any correlation between being like that and weight. I’m normal weight, reasonably slim. Many of the constant movers I know are overweight.

Ginmonkeyagain · 23/02/2024 18:46

I am one of those people. But I am not thin, just annoying.

Me too 😂

Yep. This is also me. It’s been my New Year’s resolution for about five years to ‘sit on my own sofa and read.’ I just can’t do it.

Me too. There seems to be some sort of moral superiority attached to it as well that people who can't stop are better than us sofa sloths. I used to work with a woman who said that she didn't sit down until 10pm - given that she worked, DH worked, DD was at school and she had a cleaner we did wonder what the hell she was doing (defrauding a family member of 000s, as it turned out).

As for the implied correlation between being on the go all the time and weight, I have a BMI of 22.

PaintedPottery · 25/02/2024 17:08

I’m a size 12 and 5ft 6. I rarely sit down and have quite an active job. I’m diabetic so low carb.

There is zero moral superiority attached to my inability to sit still. I would love to be able to sit in my pj’s all day, especially during the Xmas period when everyone else in my house can not get dressed all day and start on the box of celebrations at 10am. I don’t think there is anything impressive out the fact that I find trying to relax stressful. We are just all different

Waitingfordoggo · 25/02/2024 19:29

Same as @Muddywalks34. I don’t make any value judgements on whether or not people like, or are able to, spend longer periods sitting down than I do. I wish I could relax more but I have struggled with anxiety on and off throughout life and that makes me a naturally restless person (even when I am well and not having doomy thoughts). Even when I do sit, there is usually a leg bouncing or hands twiddling. (I am contemplating looking into an ADHD assessment at some point. DD is on a waiting list already).
