What are the cool kids from your school up to these days?

I keep in touch a bit and sometimes see people on Facebook from my old school (25 years ago now) and the former geeks and losers are the ones who seem to be doing really well, mostly got “big” jobs and have families etc. Whereas the cool ones stayed in my home town and don’t seem to have amounted to much.

of course, there is way more to life than you can see in a fb snapshot, and more to life than big jobs, but I wish I could have told my school age self that it was cool to be academic and embrace that. As one of those geeks who had the piss taken out of me a lot, I wish I’d known it was ok to be uncool.

What are those who were cool in your school doing now? How about the geeks and uncool kids?

The notable ones from our hugely respectable grammar school are an orthopedic surgeon, an MP, and a jazz saxophonist. One runs her own design agency.

One very brainy person went to work for Porton Down, and I believe is still there. One went off the rails and was last heard of being a travelling preacher in India.

But some of the straight As people do quite ordinary things like GP's receptionist or cake decorator. Plenty of SAHMs despite their Russell Group degrees. I was always lower half of the class but I am at least employed and contributing to GDP. 🙂

Contribute to GDP? How patronising

Childcare is so expensive and not everyone can afford to work whilst paying for childcare.

I moved away and returned to my home town last summer and went to the very local dive bar. A girl
who was the most popular/pretty was working there and she was mortified. I felt quite sorry for her as she definitely had peaked at school.

She looked about 20 years older than me, hard living in a shit estate. Sad really.

i Think that’s the most insincere ‘sad’ I’ve ever seen.

Not a clue. How do you all know? I am not in the same town that I grew up in and the only people I am in touch with from there are my parents and one school friend. That one school friend and I talk about our own lives and stress about our children rather than anything else.

I know, it's a bit weird. I don't monitor the jobs/marital status/financial status/family life of people I went to school with. Why would I care?
