Job interview this morning

Hi all just wondering if anybody could give me some advice to calm myself down or words of wisdom, anything at all really!

I have a job interview this morning, at a residential nursing home. I've wanted to work in this particular place for so long but now I've got the chance I'm freaking out. I lost my brother a few weeks ago so am under a lot of stress and my confidence is rock bottom.
I currently work as a carer in a very challenging nursing home so this new job would be much better all round, but my nerves are taking over this morning Sad

Try and take away all the other noise and focus. You want this job, I'm sure you will show you are keen. You say you've been keen to work at this place for a long time - you could tell them that and tell them why.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 23/02/2024 07:28

Take a minute to listen to the question and think about your answer before you say it.
Ask for water and take sips before answering - that can buy some time to collate the answer in your head. Good luck I'm sure you will nail it x

When really wanting a particular job in the past, I have made the mistake of telling them how great that role would be for me but not telling them how great I would be for them and that role. It’s good to be passionate about wanting to work there, but more important to let them know how much you bring to the table and what’s in it for them. This is also a chance for you to ask lots of questions and make sure it will be a good fit for you. Don’t be nervous, it sounds like you have lots of experience. Good luck.

Good luck OP, it's always a bit nerve wracking! Is the interview in person or online? If online, I've stuck post it notes all around my computer screen with notes on to help me remember!

Make sure you go prepared with a few examples of some really good practice. Aim this around what the job description says it is look for ie. Working in a fast paced environment or being a team player etc. sell yourself! This doesn't come naturally so takes preparation and thinking of some examples beforehand can help with that.

I have also done interviewing and can say I found that equally nerve wracking so I think it helps now to think that they too might not be feeling so confident.

Good luck!

Quitelikeacatslife · 23/02/2024 07:34

You've got this. Run through in your head now examples of good things you've done at work , why you are good at your job, things you take pride in and are proud of. You want to work there, that's good . Don't slag off your current place, keep it positive, time for new challenge
Just do your best then it's up to them.

You only have to come across better than one other person because this job is either going to you or the best of the rest.

Easipeelerie · 23/02/2024 07:36

They want to imagine working with you would be easy and pleasant and they want to know you have plenty of relevant experience. Sounds like you’ll be fine.

Alwaystired2023 · 23/02/2024 07:38

Remember OP the only reason this job interview exists is because they have a vacancy they need to fill! You aren't putting them out, you are doing them a big favour by going to meet them - and how great would it be for them to get to hire you and benefit from your amazing care experience in their setting.

Few deep breaths and go and be yourself, let them know all the amazing things you have done, they are just people too not anything special so you can talk to them you've got this.

Please do come back and let us know how it goes - I have a good feeling for you!

WitchDancer · 23/02/2024 07:40

No words of wisdom but I just wanted to say you're going to be fantastic! Good luck 🤞

OiFatArse · 23/02/2024 07:44

Thank you all I really appreciate it.

I've worked as a carer for 5 years so plenty of experience, just wish I wasn't so nervous around new people! Even my children keep saying Mum think how much happier you'll be if you get a new job. Says it all really.

I will keep all your advice in mind, thank you. The worst part is talking about myself, that's where I will panic more.

Good advice about not slagging my current workplace off, it has a very bad reputation anyway so I'm sure the interviewer will be aware without me saying anything 😂

Good luck OP. You can do this. 💐💐💐

DrunkenElephant · 23/02/2024 07:49

Good luck OP!

The nerves are the worst but I usually find they go when the interview starts, it’s the build up that’s awful.

They already know you could do the job, that’s why they’re interviewing you. Take your time, don’t be afraid to ask them to repeat a question and remember that they want you to do well. I’ll be thinking of you 🤞

nottojog · 23/02/2024 07:53

If I sat next to you on a bus and asked what you did, what your biggest challenges were and how you overcame them, you'd* speak freely and without nerves, because you know your stuff! This is the same as that - the only difference being that you should lean into the positives. Over rehearsed answers are so obvious, be prepared with situations/competency outline responses, but speak freely, let your personality and experience show - I can assure you, you know all the answers to the questions they will ask - they are not trying to trick you. You've got this! Good luck.

Quitelikeacatslife · 23/02/2024 08:16

It's hard to talk about yourself but you have to. Don't think you are bragging , it's not very easy but they need to know how great you are . No one else can hear you and even if it feels like you are stating the obvious go through why you'd be great in the job even if it's already on your cv, state it again , don't assume they've read it and memorisex it! . They don't know you

OiFatArse · 23/02/2024 10:51

Quick update - interview is done and wasn't as bad as I imagined, but there were a LOT of questions! Some they had to help me through but I think I did okay overall Blush I will find out the outcome by the end of today

Thank you all for your support this morning

Glad to hear it went well!

I’ll be waiting for the post later today to say you got the job 😉

OiFatArse · 23/02/2024 14:01

Unfortunately I didn't get it Sad they said it went quite well, but I need to be more confident in my answers next time and I was very nervous which they could see. I tried my best to hide the nerves but nevermind! Thank you everyone

That’s a really good tip in general for interviews. So often I trot out rehearsed answers in interviews and am not me!
