Driving test - do they have a "quota" to pass / fail?

My 17 year old son has his practical driving test tomorrow. Eek

DH is adamant that the examiners have a certain amount they're allowed to pass (not sure if this is daily or weekly / monthly) . So even if you drive well, they'll find something to fail you on if they have already reached their limit of passes if that makes sense

Does anyone know if it's true or not ?

Of course not.

DS has just passed his theory and had a test in July. When I failed my first test I was able to get another one just a month later (passed). I think it's so much more pressure knowing they may wait for weeks before the next slot comes up.

Yes I was the same

The learners today have to wait ages for a test 😫😫

I was told they don't.

But, if a particular instructor passes or fails an unusually high amount, that might be looked into, so it's going to be at the back of their mind.

Re booking a test again - Driving Test Cancellations Now really helped me. I also noticed patterns, like it being easier to find a test on Wednesday afternoon for some reason. But I live in an area where there are probably more tests available. Apparently people were coming down from Liverpool to our Midlands city to use our test centre. They'd turn up not knowing the roads, often in their own cars which might not be suitable, and then they'd fail.

So someone is a dangerous driver but I will pass them anyone. No!

NickMarlow · 23/02/2024 11:22

Absolutely not true - dh is a driving test examiner. No quotas, no pressure for them to pass more or fail more, it's all on how each candidate droves on the day. Good luck to your ds!

Thanks everyone

He's just gone off with his instructor now 🤢😫🫣

I doubt it. Probably comes from the sort of entitled twats who call up the examining centre demanding to speak to the examiner who failed their little Johnny. Have you seen how people drive? People can definitely fail sufficiently on their without any tinkering from examiners.

Fab news!

I think things have moved on from the 1970s, when I was told off for being cheeky (for being over a foot shorter than the examiner and thus saying it wasn't fair to fail me as I couldn't see the end of a number plate requested due to the fence being in the way as at my lesser height the fence blocked the view of the plate so I could only read half of it so I volunteered the further away 3 number plates instead. )

I remember that being the story when I took my test back in the 90s. The theory then was that you should try to take your test at the end of the month as they have their quota to make up.

I remember the same story. But then I thought what if they have already passed their quote for the month?

Congratulations! And my driving instructor mate says that's been around since the 90s and it's a load of rubbish.

I'm not sure if it's true or not but I remember hearing this when I learnt to drive

And me.

In the mid 1970s!

Conspiracy theories don't change much...

PrincessHoneysuckle · 24/02/2024 15:28

I certainly thought so when I failed the first two times 🤣
