Do you do yoga?

If you do, how often do you practice and what benefits do you find?
I would love to get back into it but need to get motivated!

Yes, for a decade this year. Used to go to great classes pre Covid; now it’s in my kitchen most mornings, with Adriene or doing my own thing.
When I lapse out of it, I feel it pretty quickly. I just feel older and stiffer and a bit crap without it.

Droolylabradors · 22/02/2024 18:35

Absolutely love it.

Kassandra is my yogi of choice, I find her so calming and reassuring. I often fall asleep in shvasana (sorry for incorrect sp) I find the meditative impact remarkable.

Going to head home and do half an hour now. Wonderful for the quieting of the mind.

I did invest in a lovely mat, and we had recently converted a small room from a playroom into a study, so I workout in a nearly bare room with fairy lights. It's all about the mood!

Used to go every week irl but now have just done yoga with Kassandra at home 3x a week. It just leaves me feeling more calm with less head clutter. It’s also given me visible arm muscles and a really strong core

mynameiscalypso · 22/02/2024 18:40

The DOMs I have from an upper arm focused yoga video yesterday are a testament to how good it is at building strength too.

TheSameClip · 22/02/2024 18:41

Yes. I do two classes a week (and am looking at adding a third, more dynamic class) and a short home practice most days.

I fucking hate exercise, but I have finally found something (along with walking!) that makes me feel good.

Cloud44 · 22/02/2024 18:56

@bryceQ ive heard people mention about it being more of a way of life, can you explain a bit more?

Every day except Saturday. I do a more vigorous exercise session first- running, or some kind of HIIT with weights- then yoga to cool down/stretch off. Adriene is my go-to. I think improving your flexibility has huge benefits in terms of how fit and well you feel in everyday life, and for protecting your future mobility, and the work on breathing is also massively beneficial. I think the regular practice has helped me to feel calmer, more in control and less irritable, and more able to shake off negativity.

JamMakingWannaBe · 22/02/2024 19:17

Yes - although unfortunately just once a week. It's WD40 for your joints.

bryceQ · 22/02/2024 19:20

@Cloud44 how long have you got?

"Yoga" has eight limbs or paths. Asana (physical posture) is one of eight though this message is often not conveyed in the west.

  1. Yamas - moral discipline - things like non harm to yourself and others, truthfulness, non stealing, non attachment
  1. Niyamas - observance - things like contentment, cleanliness

[these are some of the philosophical elements that people refer to - an ethical code for living your life]

  1. Asana - physical postures designed to help your body to sit during meditation
  1. Pranayama - breath control. Prana is your lifeforce
  1. Pratyahara - sensory withdrawal, taking yourself inward
  1. Dharana - deep concentration
  1. Dhyana - meditation
  1. Samadhi - bliss / enlightenment

You can practice yoga through any of these limbs, whether you can do a downward dog is irrelevant.

I live yoga with every decision or thought I make. The yamas and niyamas can be read in so many ways, eg non harm could mean not doing things that are harmful to yourself, non stealing could refer to not being late as you are being stealing of others time.

I no longer practice asana (physical posture) but I engage in daily pranayama and meditation. I am a yoga student.

I do an in person class once a week and an online class most days. I've slso been on yoga retreats, but currently don't have a job, so can't afford it currently.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 22/02/2024 20:20

Yes. I love it. I did a pregnancy yoga class twenty years ago but didn't keep it up regularly. I took it up again in lockdown and do a regular practice now. I found a class that I like locally, once a week. I like to do an Adrienne video but I do my own routine most of the time. It keeps my dodgy hip working and it's good for the head. I find it calming and invigorating. I'd miss it if I stopped it.

Strawberrypicnic · 22/02/2024 20:24

I started attending in-person classes 8 months ago and now do a class once or twice a week, a mixture of styles (hatha, vinyasa, ashtanga). I find it very rewarding. It's definitely made me stronger (I often have DOMS the day after a strenuous class!) and I love how there is endless scope for learning and improvement. I'm also more toned, although that's not why I started it! If you are relatively new to it or coming back to it after a long break I would definitely recommended in-person classes if you are able, I had previously dabbled with yoga on YouTube and although I enjoyed it, when I got to the real-life classes there were so many things I realised I had been doing not quite right. Having a teacher there to check my form and give cues was and still is really valuable.

SwordToFlamethrower · 22/02/2024 20:26

3 times a week.
It makes me feel amazing. Sorts out my stiffness, bad bad, posture, strength and over all wellbeing!

I recommend Ashtanga yoga for strength training, vinyassa yoga for balance.

Go for it!

SwordToFlamethrower · 22/02/2024 20:28

*bad back!

Racingadmin · 22/02/2024 20:43

Started the daily yoga with Adrienne this January and have continued into her free February calendar

Doing something daily I feel more bendy , have got rid of my lower back pain and my hips are looser . Dh says my shape has changed too

I run and lift weights regularly but in my mid 40's I didn't realise how much I needed yoga .

The biggest change has been that I feel calmer and am able to still my mind from racing and a constant to do list , even if it's just for that you tube video
