Is it worth going to Edinburgh for 1 night?

Me and my partner have booked to go for 1 night next week.
We have both never been and really fancied going.
It's only 1 1/2 hours on the train.
We get there at 11 am on the Wednesday and come home on the 6pm train on the Thursday.
We have booked dishoom (have been told it's nice Indian food )
Will 1 night be enough?
Can anyone recommend things to do? We are staying on the royal mile.
Thanks in advance

I've done the same a few times. It's fine. It's quite a compact city so you can get plenty in in nearly 2 days.

Yeah, it's a compact city.
Camera obscura, Mary Kings Close and the vaults are all along the royal mile.
National museum is on princes street which you can link to from the royal mile if you walk down the mound.
George / Rose street are good for shopping.
The Botanic gardens are lovely, particularly the palm houses.
Dishoom is lovely. Cafe Andaluz is on George street and north bridge - good for lunch, Spanish tapas style place.
Castle isnt much to see so personally id strike it off the list.

just mooch about the royal mile be a tourist, the museum of scotland Is great and also St James Quarter has nice shops and maybe get some late lunch before the train home.

The parliament building is open to the public and is interesting (bottom of the royal mile). You could walk up Carlton Hill for a nice view of the city. The free walking tours are good. You could have a coffee in the Elephant House where JK Rowling supposedly wrote some of Harry Potter (the graffiti in the toilets is interesting 🤣). People say the art galleries and museums are good but I've never really enjoyed them but that's probably because they're not really my kind of thing.

You're staying right in the centre of the Old City with the Castle at one end of the Royal Mile and Holyrood Palace at the other. The streets off the Mile are full of goodies too. Get a guide.book and have a lovely time - it's a beautiful city.

2 days is fine. You could take a bus tour to cover the main sites.

bamalamshabam · 22/02/2024 14:04

we've been to Edinburgh quite a bit but actually went this weekend just for about 6 or so hours. We are also 1.5 hours away on the train. It's a small city and to be honest a lot is just walking about taking the atmosphere! We visited the national museum of Scotland which was brilliant (but we did have a 5 year old with us so it was fantastic for kids) - not sure it's something we'd have just done as a couple!

If you drink alcohol there are a few good gin tasting/brewery tours that are fun.

The Elephant House is no longer open, after a fire. But there are tons of things to to in Edinburgh within walking distance of the City Centre, so you can fit a lot in. The Johnny Walker Experience is surprisingly good and has a cool bar. The Museum at Chambers Street is a lovely building, easily walkable from the Royal Mile.

Its a fab city, lovely and small. Take good shoes, its very hilly.

Second doing a bus tour as you will see more in a shorter time.

The Royal Yacht is worth a look but you probably won't have time to do that as well as all the city centre, save it and the Leith area for another time!

Ilovemyshed · 22/02/2024 14:40

If you can be in the castle area at 1 pm, its when the guns are fired.

Johnny Walker is great as is the bar in Harvey Nicks.

SecondUsername4me · 22/02/2024 14:41

I think it's fine.

Walk the Royal Mile on arrival day - book Mary Kings Close if you can.

I'd also go to the Museum.

Drinks in the dome at some point.

I Walk a lot so whenever I go to Edinburgh we end up walking for miles

Dishoom is a good call. You’ll have a lovely time.

BarrelOfOtters · 20/03/2024 11:16

Mary Kings Close is ace and gives a really good introduction to the City. I love climbing up Carlton Hill. Royal Yacht Brittania was surprisingly interesting but it's a little way out so you could save that for another time.

It's a compact very walkable city. Drink in the Dome or Jolly Judge in New Town. Try and see the old and New town. I really like Edinburgh.

I know you're sorted for food on the evening, but you should definitely check out Pickles for wine, meat and cheese or Edinburgh street food. Both are brilliant!
