I’ve really messed up, haven’t I?

I booked DD’s party at the activity centre she asked for. We went for the Sunday closest to her birthday, as some of her friends play sports etc. on Saturdays.

The invitations were handed out on the day before half term. We invited 11 children and I thought it was a bit odd that not one family responded over half term. But I assumed they were busy.

Today, at school pick up, I got talking to the mum of one of DD’s friends. She sounded a bit annoyed as she said that of course, her DD would have loved to come to the party, but they already had plans to visit family, what with it being Mother’s Day…

We genuinely hadn’t realised! 😔 My work calendar doesn’t list special days unless they’re bank holidays. And I swear Mother’s Day is earlier than usual this year.

My family doesn’t do much on Mother’s Day, we just give cards and chocolates, but I know some families have lunch together etc.

If you were me, would you try to reschedule (a bit awkward and embarrassing, and we’re unlikely to get another date close to DD’s birthday at this venue) or go ahead and hope some children turn up? I don’t want to put anyone in an awkward position, but perhaps the date would be a non-issue for some families.

Oh dear 😥I really think you need to try and reschedule.

A birthday party with just a handful of guests is ever so disappointing for a child. Does it have to be at the weekend?

We had a party on a weekday after school one year - it was that or not have one at all - and everyone who was invited came and it worked out fine.

SerialLurker997 · 22/02/2024 00:33

Ohh dear! Better off to reschedule I think, it’s a big deal for children for their friends to turn up x

sewnw · 22/02/2024 01:04

I'd try to reschedule. My dc would rather have a party on a date a while after her birthday than one where a lot of her friends wouldn't come (her birthday is usually around a half term holiday, so I schedule the party for the week after because a lot of families are away).

Reschedule!

Floralnomad · 22/02/2024 01:07

I’d reschedule , our daughter’s birthday is near Father’s Day and we used to avoid that for the same reasons . Most people do have plans on Mother’s Day .

Mangotango39 · 22/02/2024 01:10

Reschedule defo!!

CavalierApproach · 22/02/2024 01:15

Absolutely own it and reschedule! Much better outcome for your dd and people will understand.

scaredofff · 22/02/2024 02:46

Definitely reschedule. It may not be your thing but most mums I think know how much you look forward to this day (some more than their birthday) as an official day off

FTIACMB · 22/02/2024 02:56

Absolutely reschedule. I don’t think anyone would attend a school friends party on Mother’s Day, I know I wouldn’t.
You are right though, Mothers Day is a bit earlier this year.

YoungCuriousAndLookingForAnswers · 22/02/2024 02:57

Another vote for rescheduling. I'd be very surprised is you got more than 1 or 2 guests and as others have said, it would be disappointing for birthday child if they didn't have a good turn out.

SomethingDifferentt · 22/02/2024 03:01

We might or might not go to a party on MD depending on time and distance. 10-11am, 10 minutes away? Fine. 11-12 half an hour away? No, it would start interfering with lunch plans.

There will be lots of people with lunch bookings or visiting plans and I think it's unlikely to be a good turnout. I'd reschedule.

Toomuchgoingon79 · 22/02/2024 03:38

Opps, i would re-schedule. Families may not only have lunch plans but maybe they are visiting grandmothers and great grandmothers on that day.

JuneSoon · 22/02/2024 05:54

DD attended a birthday party at an activity centre on MD and there was practically a full turn out.

However, probably best to reschedule just in case. And yes, the early date for MD is catching many by surprise!

MikeRafone · 22/02/2024 05:58

Mother’s Day is a week earlier than last year, that’s because Easter is a week earlier than last year. Mother’s Day is always 3 weeks before Easter, traditionally it was when servants went back to their own parish before Easter to their mother church for a service. Thus Mother’s Day

I would.

But if no one has responded (very rude to not even rsvp no) then yes I'd reschedule.

Velvian · 22/02/2024 08:05

It really wouldn't bother me, but then I hate mother's day! I couldn't tell you when it is either tbh.

IsleOfPenguinBollards · 22/02/2024 22:10

Thank you all. 🙂 I have managed to reschedule and have the updated invitations ready to give out tomorrow. I think it was the right decision as today, DD asked an invitee if he was coming and he apparently said he was coming to the activity, but he wan’t allowed to stay for the food afterwards!

I expect some of the children could still have made the original date without problems, but it would have been a stressful wait to find out, as several of these families leave it pretty late to reply to invitations. And two of them clearly don’t know what RSVP means - my fault for writing in French, I suppose. 😉

Fantastic! You've been impressively 'on it' there and hopefully DD will have the time of her life.

At least once a month there seems to be a MN thread complaining that no one RSVPs any more. You're a sad statistic OP 😉

WhatInTheFuckery · 22/02/2024 22:41

Glad you've managed to reschedule, all's well that ends well. MD party wouldn't bother me personally, they'd have more fun at a friend's party than with me! My youngest's is usually around Easter time so will spend the rest of my life factoring it in and my eldest's is just before Christmas so we get the invites out early hopefully before anyone has plans!
