What do you do on a winter weekday evening?

Every day at work, my colleague says to me "what are you doing tonight then?" and every Mon-Thurs my answer is "nothing???"

I get home from work at 6pm and by the time I:
Get changed
Empty the dishwasher
Put a load of washing on
Decide what to have for dinner
Cook/put dinner in the oven
Eat
Do the dishes
Wipe down the kitchen
Run the hoover around
Wipe down the bathroom
Have a shower

By the time I've done all that it's about 8.30 and I'll maybe get an episode of a TV show or a couple of pages of my book before it's lights out just after 9. I'm up at 5am for work.

In the summer months I'll maybe just have a cold meal and use the cooking time to go for a walk instead.

Sometimes I'll meet a friend for dinner on a weekday but it's usually reserved for a weekend.

My colleague thinks this is weird / unusual. Is it? What does everyone else do of an evening when it's dark and cold and rainy outside?

Basically the same as you without the cleaning/hoovering as I have a cleaner.

DH does the dishes

We may ferry DD around, she has Explorers on Tuesdays and we car share, we do one drive every 2 weeks apprx.

I may do some banking if necessary or online shopping.

Once in a blue moon we go for dinner.

On Mondays and Thursdays I play a sport. Get home around 18 00 from work and picking DC up. DH has generally cooked dinner so might wolf that but depends on time. The time I get home depends on match time but will be around 10 so I will shower and get to bed. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays I take my DC to their sports practice straight from school. I'll have prepared food in the morning and they eat in the car. We get home around 10 and it's showers and straight to bed. On a Friday I go straight to a club where I volunteer from 5 - 8 30. Generally get home and collapse in a heap. Basically I do sport, watch/drive to sport or coach sport. Good job I love it although we haven't gone tonight as one DC at a birthday and one has a sore knee so it's been a bonus night off.

Yeah, I guess that's the fundamental difference between me and my colleague. He's married so he doesn't need to worry about the cleaning / laundry / cooking because his now retired wife does it. On the occasions he does cook for himself its a microwave meal or fried egg sandwich (nothing wrong with those but quick and easy).

I'm single, living alone, and usually knackered of an evening Grin

DC grown up, so no childcare issues or responsibilities.
One night a week I go to choir, and try to go to the gym on my way home from work on at least some of the other days. Cook dinner and have a visit from or to an elderly parent at least once a week, maybe more, and spend time on phone to DC. Read , watch TV or Netflix by myself or with DH. Don't often go out during the week.

Mon-Weds get home,do a home workout,tidy up,make tea,take dogs out,go online/read a mag/crossword
Usually go up to bed about 9 and read a book for an hour or two.
Thur-Sun do all the above except we open a bottle of wine and watch a film/tv series.
Summer days would probably sit out and dine outdoors too..

Choir one night, tennis or yoga one night, cinema or dinner with friend one night. If you’re single and work out the house, why do you need to clean so much every day? We’re 2 adults and only put dishwasher on every few days, same for laundry.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 21/02/2024 20:42

Nothing, I'm done with any cleaning/cooking by 6pm, sit down and watch TV or read.

ilovepixie · 21/02/2024 20:45

Nothing! I'm to tired after work to do anything! Just eat dinner, shower and read watch TV.

coxesorangepippin · 21/02/2024 20:45

Basically the same as you. Kids in by by 8, I spend 8-10pm on MN or watching TV.

In summer we go outside straight after supper, kids in bed a bit later.

Korkie · 21/02/2024 20:45

Come home, have a shower and get into my scruffs, then laze around watching telly and browsing online until bedtime.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 21/02/2024 20:46

You put a wash on, wipe down the bathroom and hoover every evening? No wonder you don't have time to do much! I often bring some work home, dh and I take turns to cook and we usually unload the dishwasher while dinner is cooking. Ds loads the dishwasher and wipes the surfaces after dinner. We usually watch an episode of something. We used to do the cleaning between us at the weekend, but we just started having a cleaner once a week.

I don't clean every evening. I do wipe down the kitchen every night but hoovering and the bathroom is every other night. The laundry has built up this week because I didn't have time to do any over the weekend. I put the dishwasher on every night because it's a slimline one and it's full after a days dishes.

You're up at 5, that's a long day.

I used to do stuff after work but I look back and I don't know how I did it.
