Will Lindsay Hoyle survive this evening's debacle?

He's never been an effective Speaker - this could be the end of his tenure.

The state of politics 😵‍💫

I like Lindsey Hoyle. I've met him. He's a really nice man very genuine

Good, we might get a proper vote in the GE. He’s our MP & the gentlemen’s agreement means nobody really stands against him let alone beats him so we’re disenfranchised as he doesn’t vote on anything in Parliament.
My DH has had dealings with him locally , through both business & charity work, regularly & went to school with him, so we know him personally & really he’s not as nice as he likes to make out, like his father before him, MP Doug Hoyle, now Baron Hoyle.

He's hanging on for now but there have been 67 expressions of no confidence.

And in the real world, people care about the state of the NHS and inflation not HoC conventions.

HiveSentinelApis · 22/02/2024 19:57

@Westfacing unless it was all planned ?

IvorTheEngineDriver · 22/02/2024 20:00

Who cares? This whole episode shows in terms too stark to be denied how disconnected the "Westminster Bubble" is from the public.

Like anyone in the Middle East gave a fuck about a cease fire vote in the House of Commons.

EasternStandard · 22/02/2024 20:02

I don’t think it’s disconnected from the public given the protests each week and issues that keep flaring up

Op not sure either way

By whom, Hoyle?

I think the fact he basically caved under pressure from Labour does not reflect well- basically he wanted to stay speaker more than he wanted to do the job properly. I hate weakness. Also reflects badly on those who pressured him. I fear it will have to be a spoiled ballot for me come the GE.

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 22/02/2024 20:12

Depends how stubborn he is I guess. There's no way to actually force him out, he has to resign. They can vote to censure him, but not remove him. It's only general pressure that might make him feel like he has to resign.

By whom, Hoyle?

him and whoever the other people involved , i may be cynical but i would assume there is many Machiavelli's in politics

He's not a great Speaker. He means well which isn't necessarily the best qualification. John Bercow would have never allowed himself to be stitched up like this.
