What do you do on Mothering Sunday?

Just that, really. Is it a normal Sunday plus a card and flowers, or do you normally go out for the day or do something else?

I usually sit in a grump because DH didn't bother getting the DC organised and then I console the DC because they wanted to do things but didn't/couldn't without dh's help.

Perhaps this year I'll take DC out to the zoo to celebrate all the mama bears/giraffe/lions

Andnowshesatoddler · 21/02/2024 18:50

Since I've become a mother I make it a special day for my daughter and I. I know for a lot it's just a normal day and made up by the card companies but for me personally I waited for over 8 years to be able to be a mother and for me it's a point to stop life and do something for us both.
Previously we would see our own mothers but it wasn't a big thing as a child/teen I would go for days out with my Mum though.

Nannyfannybanny · 21/02/2024 18:53

My DKs will send me a card, maybe flowers. Mothering Sunday is just an American consumer product. The "Mother" in this case is actually the church.

ehb102 · 21/02/2024 18:54

I book a restaurant of my choosing and we go for lunch. I get a card and flowers from my child. I may bother to make a cake we can eat in the afternoon but one I like best for a change.

Jemimapuddleduk · 21/02/2024 18:55

I aim to see my mum and my mother in law (alternate the Saturday/Sunday each year). Hopefully get breakfast made for me by dh and the kids.

HarrietStyles · 21/02/2024 18:57

I have a lie-in and my husband and kids bring me tea and breakfast in bed, with cards and a token gift from each child (only worth a few pounds but they have picked or made themselves). Husband will have booked a nice restaurant for us to have a roast dinner and planned something fun for us to do together as a family in the afternoon.

Same set up but reversed on fathers day!

WillYouPutYourCoatOn · 21/02/2024 19:09

Token gift from DC. Cards made at preschool. Teen DS has bought me chocolate seashells since he was 3, he's 16 this year Grin I'll choose a breakfast I really like, Eggs Benedict/Florentine but will have to assist as poached eggs are DH nemesis.

Have booked Sunday lunch out for me (DH and kids) plus DMum (and dad) plus DNan, because it's all their mother's days too. Will probably get a bouquet and chocs for them set up at the table in the restaurant. We will cover the bill.

Honestly I'd prefer to cook for everyone at home, but "it's not the done thing" for mother's day, and DH murdered the beef bourgignon last year, so I ended up hurriedly cooking French chicken for 8 in a right flap, so eating out it is!

Katherineryan1986 · 21/02/2024 19:16

When the girls were younger, husband would book a lunch out for us all. As they have grown up, they do the booking and organising now.
However, this year will be my daughter’s first mother’s day, her baby is 4 mths old now, and so I don’t know what we will do.
Perhaps we will just have lunch with younger daughter is older daughter’s partner arranged something for her (he has been reminded)

Church as usual. Cards and flowers for my Mum. Sunday tea at my parents house. I would like a dressing gown and perfume so I'll buy that online (so I get what I actually want!) and then give it to DH to wrap with my DC. They'll get me a card and write that together. They'll probably choose some flowers together.

I am so fortunate to have a healthy DC that I like to celebrate. I'll light a candle for my babies who should be here but aren't.

Dweetfidilove · 21/02/2024 19:37

Variation of dinner at mine, my parents, a sibling or a restaurant for just the mothers and children.

If Dinnerat home, that is cooked by one of the men, so is ready when we return from church.

Favourite gifts used to be something made at school, so now my daughter is at secondary, she makes me a card and gets me some flowers. My mom gets the same.

Darklane · 21/02/2024 19:45

Usually getting on with my normal day, waiting for a phone call or text that rarely comes, trying not to feel upset or peeved off reading online of all the lovely things friends get given or taken out for. My grown up only DS never remembers, same with birthdays, though he keeps in touch regularly & we get on great he just never bothers about such things. I used to make a big deal of it for my mum when she was alive, same with birthdays as did she, so I try not to admit how much it hurts that it doesn’t even cross his mind.

SquareCrumpets · 21/02/2024 19:46

We go to visit my MIL. My own mum is dead, and MIL won't be around forever.

I celebrate with my own children and partner on a different day.

Ilovelurchers · 21/02/2024 19:52

Don't have a regular tradition. My daughter will usually give me a bard and gift (ex is pretty good at stumping up for this, and she is organised enough usually to pick stuff). And I get some cards (one from me, one from dd) and gifts/flowers for my mom.

Last year me and DD made afternoon tea for my mom and took it over, but it was a bit stressful making all the different stuff, and possibly not worth it just for the four of us (dad was there too). So may do something different this year.

I also text my friends who are moms and wish them a happy mother's day too, and one of my former stepsons (who I am still close to) usually texts and wishes me a happy mother's day and that's nice.

I know people say it's a made up special event - but they are all made up by humans at some point or another, aren't they? None of them developed organically with the earth itself? Is the made up nature a reason not to celebrate it if people find it meaningful/fun? I love special occasions and mark as many of them as I can possibly justify!

Danikm151 · 21/02/2024 19:57

We usually go out for lunch. This year we’re going to visit my nan in her care home so 4 generations will be in the room 😄
card and a little gift is all that’s expected. My son turns 4 the day before so his birthday will overshadow it this year 😂

SleepingStandingUp · 21/02/2024 20:09

We used to do pub lunch it twins are four and it's not I'm any way relaxing. This year we're at MilS for lunch.

He buys his Mom a card from him, I buy my Mom a card from me and I buy both of them a Nan card from the kids. Flowers / token present. I'll see my Mom Sun morning or Saturday. I'll also get cards from school and one from Cubs so seven cards from 3 kids 😂 and a token present the kids (eldest) have picked.

JT69 · 21/02/2024 20:11

This will be my first year where all my children don’t live at home. Just hoping for a little acknowledgment. I feel silly even bothering about it but it is nice to have a little treat and a bit of thought.

DappledThings · 21/02/2024 20:11

Get a little bunch of daffodils from church. The children go round the congregation and hand them out to everyone.

Cards they make at school. Never been a bigger deal than that, never wanted it to be.

AliasGrape · 21/02/2024 20:15

More on the ‘normal Sunday plus card/ token gift’ end of things (I usually get breakfast in bed too).

This year we’re away for a long weekend, but we booked that ages ago before we realised it was Mother’s Day weekend. I will still hopefully get breakfast in bed and then we will go for a swim and then a walk and nice lunch somewhere.
