Storage for a lot of lego

DD has quite a few Lego sets and a teenage relative has kindly given DD her lifetime’s collection, which a lot 😰

The trouble is, there’s now so much of it, it’s impossible to do any of the sets because it takes so long to find the specific pieces.

If you’ve mastered Lego storage please could you share your tips? I’ve realised keeping ‘green’ together isn’t enough, it needs to be in 2-3 subsets by shade.

Any recommendations of good storage solutions with a lot of smaller sections would be gladly received especially by my back which is shot after 90 minutes of searching through the tubs

If she has specific sets she likes to build then get a ziplocked bag per set - all the bricks plus the front of the box in there. Keep the books in a separate file.

For random bricks used just for creative play, store by type not colour.

The 1x deep blocks in a tray, the 2x deep blocks in a tray, flat blocks in a tray, doors and windows in a tray etc. Doesn't look as pleasing but much much easier for building.

We have this problem - tried boxing by colour, also type eg wheels, windows, people which works for a while and then there’s a relapse. Watching for ideas as the amount becomes overwhelming

We are a store by colour family and then favourite sets built on shelves. But DD is very much a free builder so many sets are dismantled after being built once.

The unit is from the range.

I can definitely see the efficiency of store by type not colour but for how we use it I’m not sure.

DD is mainly a free builder and it’s the only toys that she has in her room really and is free to play as long as she likes after stories until she feels tired. So 95% of the time the chaos isn’t a problem.

But, during half terms and on a rainy Sunday we might have a Lego day together and make a few sets to create a miniature town etc. That’s when it’s becoming impossible.

Also, I’d like her to have some sort of storage that she’s able to manage herself (she’s 6) because it being all over the bedroom floor isn’t great.

Thanks for the photo @BloddersMum that does look very useful and you’re super organised.

I think I’d need a box / set of boxes though because there’s no wall space for it to go against.

Sorting it into colours or types is quite time consuming and they won't go back into the correct boxes after play - you will spend your life sorting lego!
The best solution I've found is one of those drawstring mats or a large picnic blanket - it keeps all the bricks in one place, it's easy to rummage around and find pieces and tidying up is a breeze.

What about a Tuff Tray? Tip it all onto that then slide it under her bed or into a corner when she's done playing?
