Every night I read books to my son in bed then I sing until he falls asleep. We have a few songs which are quite special and often requested:

  • You are my sunshine
  • Dream a little dream by Ella Fitzgerald
  • Sunrise by Norah Jones
  • Fields of gold by Eva Cassidy
  • God only knows by the Beach Boys

What special songs you do you sing to your kids?

Really old fashioned lullabies, mostly that my Grandma sang to us. Also some traditional folk songs too

You are my sunshine
Make you feel my love
True colours
Fields of gold
Somewhere over the rainbow

That's my bedtime karaoke tracklist, i'm not a good singer so I can't help but laugh at some of the notes I hit, especially in "Rainbow song mummy" but DD seems to like it

At bedtime I sing a little song I made up when DS was a newborn. I stroke his beautiful face while I sing it and then shower him in kisses. He’s 6, so he still likes it.
I sing it to DD as well, but she prefers a bum pat over kisses.

My son won't let me sing at all (in fairness I have a rubbish voice) unless the song is the one about a duck going up to the lemonade stand.

Hey! (bom bom bom) Got any GRAPES?

My DS 14 loved the duck song when he was about 5, and in all honesty...my then DP and I loved singing along to it too🤣
A couple of weeks ago I went into the living room to see my DD7 watching it, she had randomly come across it on YouTube. It brought back really fond memories 🥰

Mine are grown up now but it was “you are my sunshine” and “morning town ride” (known as rocking rolling riding in our house)

These 2 for mine ... awwww

Cherrywino · 21/02/2024 02:39

Constellations- Jack Johnson
Only Yesterday- The Carpenters
Cherry Wine- Hozier
Land of the silver birch
I like the flowers, I like the daffodils

Hush little baby, but I dont know the real words so the things mama and daddy are gonna buy have always been whatever random stuff I could rhyme. "And if that lightbulb starts to flicker, mamas gonna buy you a pair of knickers. And if those knickers just fall down, daddys gonna buy you Swindon Town, and if Swindon Town start to lose, Mamas gonna buy you some big clown shoes" etc

Godifeelsolow · 21/02/2024 08:18

@ConstantastheNorthernStar I couldn’t sing Landslide to my Dd without being in bits 😩 beautiful song

scrivette · 21/02/2024 08:22

At night I sing 'Rocking Rolling Riding' by the Seekers as my Mum sang it to them when they were babies and they call it 'Nana's Song'.

I also sing my own made up words to the tune of Brahms Lullaby that I made up when DS was born and I have adapted for each child.

DD also has twinkle twinkle and baa baa black sheep, although I often use the tune and make up different words as I get bored singing baa baa!!

Love this thread! I swap their names into name songs that sound similar, so into 'My Irish Molly', 'Lily of Laguna', 'Lily the Pink', 'K-k-k-katy', 'Daisy, daisy' etc. One of my dds has a similar sounding name to Caroline so she gets a version of 'Sweet Caroline' and 'Oh my darling Clementine'.

Other songs:
When you're smiling
I'd Do Anything
Boom Bang a Bang
Show me the way to go home
Chim chiminey
Lets go Fly a Kite
Spoonful of sugar
Bonnie wee Jeannie McColl
Puff the magic dragon
Morningtown Ride
It's a Long Way to Tipperary
Doe a Deer
Leaning on a Lampost
It isn't any trouble just to S-M-I-L-E
Pretty little girl from Omagh
And of course You are my Sunshine :)

And animal songs like 'Nellie the Elephant', 'Donkey Riding', 'Why does the brown cow give white milk', 'Teddy Bear's Picnic', 'Horsey Horsey don't you stop' etc
