Hair styles in two parts - are they childish?

And if so, why?

I can’t think of a better way to describe them - bunches, French plaits, Dutch braids, pigtails, space buns - that sort of thing. I plait my hair in two braids at night to stop it getting tangled up, but I wouldn’t during the day because I think it would look childish on me. I have a colleague who wears her hair in bunches and I think she looks great with them, but there is definite eye rolling from others (that’s a different issue, though)

But as I stood on the train platform this morning with my ponytail end whipping me in the eyes, with a little girl nearby with two neat plaits, I was musing about if there are any two part hair styles which are perceived as a bit more grown up. And also why do we outgrow pigtails but not ponytails?

Ignore the eye rollers?

I don't think you should worry about what other people think.

I do wear my hair in a single plait wiite often. It's neat and out of the way.

The best way I found was to not care what other people think and just dress or style my hair how I want.

I do wear my hair in two plaits or two French plaits quite often, but then I don't have an office job, just WFH, so doesn't really matter.

It has crossed my mind I'm too old for it, but as you say, why should that be? It's practical and a bit less harsh on me than having the hair fully pulled back. I haven't got great hair so wearing it loose looks crap unless I really try and style it.

Midnlghtrain · 20/02/2024 10:31

I do my hair in two plaits / space buns or similar for work quite often. It doesn't pull at my hair as much as one central hairstyle!

I think people might think they're childish because they're used to seeing them on children, but personally I just think they're hairstyles.

I wear mine in bunches all the time!

Not high ones so don't know if that makes a difference

idontlikealdi · 20/02/2024 10:39

I wear mine in low plaits or bunches under a ski or riding helmet so I look less like a potato. Couldn't care less what anyone thinks of my plaits!

neleh87 · 20/02/2024 10:41

I put my hair in two plaits a lot, especially if I haven't had time to dry it properly, or when I'm on holiday. Sometimes I do this style for work, but I am a primary school teacher and you can get away with this sort of thing!

I'm 36 😊

Perhaps people are rolling their eyes but I don't notice!

LolaSmiles · 20/02/2024 10:42

High bunches are associated with younger girls to me but plaits and braids are age-less to me.
Plaits and braids definitely suit some people more than others though, but that's no different to any other hairstyles.

IsadoraQuagmire · 20/02/2024 10:43

My hair is in two plaits right now, I'm in my 20s. Its my favourite hairstyle. And Willie Nelson wears his hair in two plaits and he's 90!

HAF1119 · 20/02/2024 11:11

If you want more grown up version of 2 plaits/bunches maybe 2 French plaits? French plaits tend to look more mature

However personally I'd just do your hair however you like it! :) it's hair, not a declaration of age - those who think otherwise maybe need to grow up a bit themselves!

These kind of little things in life that we avoid doing because of the eye rollers make me frustrated.
When the eye roller is on their death bed, they're going to be thinking about all the shit they should have done, never considering the shit they've put people off doing.
Those of us who have not worn the bunches, the pretty dresses etc, we'll regret that and realise too late the eye rollers of the world shouldn't have dictated how we lived. Let them roll.

We shouldn't be having boring lives conforming to the standards of people we frankly don't give two shits about because they may disapprove and unfortunately, we do.

We hold back so much, "when we're slimmer/less pale/had more sleep" etc and tomorrow isn't promised anyway.

We all need to be a bit braver and please ourselves over others.
Unfortunately, it's easier said than done.

And anyone reading this who is an "eye roller", mind your business, let others be fabulous without your boring wee judgemental arses on our back.
