Tonsillitis AGAIN. I can’t cope with it anymore.

I just cannot believe I have it again. I only had it around 3 weeks ago, took a full course of antibiotics, cleared up fine and it’s back. In agony when I swallow. Swollen glands, ears hurt, temperature. Just feel like utter shit basically. The swallowing is a killeeeeer.

I think I need to push to have them removed (it’s an effort for my GP to even refer me to ENT - he just doesn’t seem to want to……).

I get it multiple times a year and not just a mild case, it completely wipes me out!

Anybody had theirs removed??

DS17 had his removed at the beginning of January. He had 5+ years of misery, multiple trips to the doctors, logging every bout.

It took a bout of tonsillitis during his GCSEs to finally get a referral in September last year. The consultant took one look and said he should have had them out years ago.

Beginning of Jan he had his op. Admittedly it was 10 days of pain and not eating much. DS17 did say he wondered if it was worth it.

Nearly 7 weeks on there is a huge difference, no recurring sore throats, no stuffiness in his nose (had his nose down at the same time) and his voice has got deeper! Everyone who he knows has said what a difference it has made to his voice.

And yes he knows he can't use that excuse again to get out of college, but he seems a happier person.

@lorn195 thank you - that is very reassuring. I will call the GP so that it gets logged and push for a referral. It’s the recovery i’d be nervous about but honestly, I can empathise with your son as I’m in the same position. Sometimes it genuinely feels like you never fully shift it?! Within a couple of weeks it just keeps coming back!

My mother, who is 90 now, had a miserable time when she was in her early 20s with recurring tonsillitis and had her tonsils removed. I know there is a reluctance to remove tonsils because of longterm risks but I can't remember my mum ever being sick, or have any allergies.

Many years back I kept suffering recurring tonsillitis. A colleague mentioned it could be an impacted wisdom tooth causing the problem. It was! Had the tooth extracted and have never had tonsillitis since. Might be worth checking out.

Bumped into an ex-colleague last week who is having hers removed this week. She is 50 and has had enough. The hospital did tell her though that her tonsils are pretty embedded (due to age) and it will be a 6 week recovery.
