A level drama audition

Multipleexclamationmarks · 19/02/2024 23:13

My daughter has applied to a local college to do A level drama

She has been told that she has to perform a 2 minute soliloquy for the audition but has no clue what is expected as she isn't doing gcse drama. She has asked the drama teacher at her school for guidance but she hasn't been helpful.
Anybody had to do similar?
What piece did they perform please?

They usually say if it should be Shakespeare or modern. You need to find something that shows depth of characterisation - tricky in 2mins
Have a look here https://www.monologuegenie.com/2-minute-monologues.html

Why does she want to do drama if she’s not done it before? Has she done any dramatics outside of school?

Just think of plays she likes or films and choose one she can relate to. Lots from Shakespeare, like Lady Macbeth or Barbie (not sure you could make that 2 minutes though) https://www.cosmopolitan.com/uk/entertainment/a25727/monologues-women-film/

@TeenLifeMum at her school they can't do drama and art gcse. She chose art but is part of the drama club and has done amateur dramatics. The college said not doing gcse isn't a barrier to doing A level but she needs to audition as she won't have the gcse grade for them to see if she's good enough to cope with the course.

DD did this. I'll ask her tomorrow what piece she did, because I can't remember. She's really enjoying the A-level, and is getting A grades despite not having studied drama at GCSE.

@Multipleexclamationmarks that makes sense - in that case the drama club may be able to help. Good luck!

Trying to find age appropriate text for teens is really hard.

Something from Little Women might work.

Or Juliet (she is only 14)
Or Anne of Green Gables. If you could get some of the script from Anne with an E that could be fun.

She could also try for two contrasting pieces. Do double check with the school just in case.

Another option is a poem.

DD chose Antigone's Final Speech by Sophocles for her A-level audition. A few years back now, but I still know it word for word as she practiced so often!

Thanks for the links and suggestions, I'll show them all to her.
