Does your teen have a cabin/loft/high sleeper bed?

And if they do is it sturdy, good quality, lots of space?

Trying to buy a high sleeper for my 13 year old and every single one seems to have such mixed reviews I can't tell what is good and what is crap.

We're replacing a very rickety, noisy bunk bed so something sturdy is essential.

My 13 year old has one which is excellent but I've no idea where it was from . I had one as a teen which was very sturdy and I have slept in it as an adult and it still felt nice and sturdy. That was a Stompa bed I dont know if they still exist.

RausageSoul · 19/02/2024 19:20

Ours is from great little trading co, very sturdy and PIL was very impressed as he usually comes and makes modifications to furniture he doesn't think is steady enough!

Adults have slept on it quiet safely too

No. DS had one as a child, but by 14 was 6ft 2" and played a lot of rugby. We bought him a KS bed instead (fortunately had a decent sized room).

I think they have a shelf life for teens, particularly if they are likely to grow tall. Although I just realised I don't know if you have a 13 yo son or daughter.

Mine has the Ikea Smastadt with wardrobe and desk. I built it so I know it's damn sturdy!

It's 8 years old now and no creaks or movement and no need to retighten anything.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 19/02/2024 19:25

Yes, we needed a high sleeper as teen DD is in a really small box room so she has the bed up top and then a big desk underneath with a space for hanging clothes on one side. We actually had it purpose built by a joiner as there's the 'box' bit taking up some space in the room so a shop-bought one wouldn't have worked. He did a fantastic job and it didn't cost the earth. It's ideal for her but she's quite small (and I think will stay that way as I am too). DS16 wouldn't have a hope of sleeping comfortably up there as he's much bigger!

Decafflatteplease · 19/02/2024 19:34

IKEA Kura here, seems to work well.

MrsKintner · 19/02/2024 19:39

I've looked at Ikea but we already have a single mattress and I thought Ikea beds only take Ikea size mattresses...

Box room unfortunately so no chance of having a bigger bed and needs to fit everything underneath! I guess luckily he is probably not going to end up super tall.

All mine had mid/high sleepers with varying success.

Dd1 had a lovely wooden bed with desk and sofa bed underneath. I got it second hand as her dream bed she'd been angling for and one came up cheaply on ebay close enough. Within 6 months she decided she didn't like being so high and has slept on the sofa bed for the last 10 years. <sigh>
Dd2 inherited her sisters mid-sleeper when she was 5yo. It's a lovely mid-sleeper with a slide out of the bed and a tent underneath. We did take the slide off when she was about 14/15yo. It's just come down as she's asked for dd1's bed which is being replaced.
Ds has a gaming bed, or rather a bed with a very large desk underneath. I think it has strip lights round it too. He loves it, although it does squeak a bit when he moves in bed.

DS's IKEA one creaked like a sailing ship in a gale every time he moved in bed. Perhaps they have improved since then, but I thought it was v v disappointing.

Dd has a high sleeper from Argos and it’s been great - we did fix it to the wall to sturdy it up but there’s been no issue

Was it the one with the desk and cupboard underneath?

DS had a wooden high sleeper in early teens but he broke slats as it was flimsy. We replaced it with one of the slightly higher beds with lots of drawers underneath. This seemed sturdier. It has worked better now he’s a bit older and he has girlfriend round to watch films etc.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 19/02/2024 19:56

ikea used to do their own European sized mattresses but now do UK sizes

Ds had an ikea smastad until he was about 13 and it was great but then he decided he didn’t want a high up bed any more! The storage was great - the wardrobe can be designed however you like with hanging, drawers or shelves and the desk had more drawers too

His brothers’s ikea Svärta bunkbeds were very creaky - it’s the metal on metal that is the problem so avoid anything like that.

They now both have malm ottoman beds which are fantastic for storage and highly recommended if space allows for a desk elsewhere.

dc had an ikea one. the giant bulky one with desk&wardrobe inbuilt.
dc went into a 'normal' single at 14 as was fed up with climbing up.
we have high ceilings but with standard 2.5m the head hight can be a bit tight.

Kids European Single (90 X 200cm) Loft Bed from Wayfair, is what my 14 year old son has.

Underneath, he's got a white gloss wall mounted TV unit (also from Wayfair) for his TV/PS5. You can still see the floor, with it being wall mounted so it doesn't make the room look as small. Also, two white gloss bedside tables either side of the TV unit (not wall mounted unfortunately!) To keep all his school/art stuff in and it doesn't look overcrowded at all.
When he's on his gaming chair, he can easily fit underneath. When he's had friends stay over, it's ideal space for a double airbed to fit under (that's all the width floor space he has, space to fit a double airbed.)

We've actually cut the legs on this so it's abit lower down (he didn't like how close the ceiling spiders were to him 🤣) and it's still very sturdy and not squeaky. Think it's been two years now and it's still going strong.

fluffycatkins · 19/02/2024 21:42

Yes, my dd has a lovely west elm one. Wasn't particularly cheap but very sturdy and wearing well.

TheChosenTwo · 19/02/2024 22:19

We got one for ds (now 12), I think it was from made.com - i hate it and thought it was a bad idea even at the time but he was quite sure of what he wanted and dh thought it would be a good idea too.
It’s sturdy and well made but I HATE climbing up it to change the sheets although ds pretty much does it all himself now!

Milliways · 19/02/2024 22:22

We had a brilliant one from Flexa as it took a standard mattress. Lasted DS from age 3 until he went to uni when was 6’ tall. Had a pull out desk with bookshelf, chest of drawers underneath and matching wardrobe.

Jellycatspyjamas · 19/02/2024 23:38

My DD has an ikea one with the wardrobe and desk underneath. It’s very sturdy, doesn’t squeak and has loads of storage, pretty sure it’s a standard single mattress size.

MrsKintner · 20/02/2024 10:24

Thanks all, I think I'm sold on the Ikea one!

Wheresthescissors · 20/02/2024 10:31

We've one like this from Amazon, takes a full single mattress and adult weight. The one we have is shorter in height though, I think they come in various options.

Does your teen have a cabin/loft/high sleeper bed?
Otterry · 27/10/2024 08:50

We have this (IKEA mid sleeper with draws and storage underneath) for my 16 year old. His clothes fit in the under bed drawers because they are deep. We kept his UK size mattress and just put it on top. The width is fine but he does have a bit of room at the end of the bed where the European mattress sizes are longer. It’s fine and we just cover up the end with the duvet so you can’t see most of the time. He has the smallest bedroom so it means that he can have a desk and a bookshelf too. He also sits on the bed for gaming with a monitor on his desk. He has managed to break one of the drawers so it’s stiff to pull out but he has had it for a few years now. We got the desk from Ikea too and it was £25!
