Pre-menopause I could sleep like a log, now I never sleep!

I seem to have developed the ability to stay awake nearly all night these days. I go to bed tired, often shattered as I haven't slept the night before. I lie with my eyes closed for what seems hours on end and then open them, and find out it's only an hour later. I then stay wide awake until 3 or 4am! I don't drink coffee or alcohol. Telly is off before bed and I read. This lack of sleep is pissing me off and it's really aging my face. I look/feel old and groggy. 🙁Anyone else overcome this?

I’m lying here wondering the same, I’m peri only but it’s horrible :-(

Try a magnesium supplement.

Lucythecleaner · 19/02/2024 01:09

Same! I've suffered insomnia for years. Even worse now I'm 45 still wide awake at 4-5am start falling in to a deep sleep at around 6ish then my alarm goes off at 7.30 😴

I've also been taking magnesium for years and it doesn't help at all

caringcarer · 19/02/2024 02:34

Same. I only sleep about 4 hours a night now. I used to sleep for 8 hours.

FabFebHalfTerm · 19/02/2024 02:36

👋🏻. Right there with you!!

SheepAndSword · 19/02/2024 02:52

Another nocturnal one here. Decided to watch 48 hours.

DinnaeFashYersel · 19/02/2024 03:01

Same here.

Could sleep anywhere, anytime before and now it's raging insomnia plus exhaustion

MinnieMountain · 19/02/2024 04:18

Magnesium generally helps me get to sleep initially. Never stops me waking up early. It’s s bugger.

Stopsnowing · 19/02/2024 04:31

get to sleep easily but always wake at 4. Hrt used to work. Not now. Can go back to sleep at six but have to get up at six thirty

Rowgtfc72 · 19/02/2024 04:42

Nod of at 930pm while reading absolutely no problem. Wake up every hour or so. Lucky to get 4 hrs a night( and I take magnesium)
My record when I was at uni was a 17hr straight stretch of sleep.

MrsCratchitstwiceturneddress · 19/02/2024 07:09

Try taking phenergan. It's an antihistamine. You can get it through online pharmacies if you can't find it in real life. A very sympathetic gp gave me a tip off a year or so ago when I was in the grips of yet another bout of insomnia that HRT hadn't alleviated. It makes you sleepy at bedtime but doesn't make you feel like a zombie the next day.

eilaka · 19/02/2024 07:26

Same here op.

Touty · 19/02/2024 07:30

Im the same, I’ve had to resort to prescription sleeping tablets or buy over the counter antihistamine. I couldn’t manage a traditional job anymore because of sleep problems.

Beebumble2 · 19/02/2024 07:45

Same here, although I’m retired so next day problems are usually not a problem. I have no answers, as staying awake all night is a random every few nights. Most nights getting off to sleep before 3 am is a problem.
I’ve started to listen to radio 4 dramas on my phone, they’re in episodes so when I drift off the next episode doesn’t play. I only put one ear bud in and have the sound down very low.
If you’re on your own, an Alexa will play for a limited amount of time so same effect.
when you do get a spontaneous full nights sleep, it’s wonderful.

xSideshowAuntSallyx · 19/02/2024 07:47

I'm peri-menopausal and the opposite, I used to be a real up with the larks person. Now I struggle getting up. But I also went through a stage last year when I was only getting 2 or 3 hours of sleep a night.

I'm fed up now as I actually miss getting up early and actually feeling like I could do stuff.

Canterbutytales · 19/02/2024 08:06

Same here too. Magnesium does precisely nothing. OTC meds used to work but no longer, just make me groggy. Was awake til 4:30 the other night, luckily wasn’t at work the next day. Getting me down tbh as I actually feel tired and sleep deprived but can’t switch off, think it’s got worse since I had Covid when I think about it.

ghostbusters · 19/02/2024 08:13

Magnesium glycinate at bedtime and HRT have massively helped my insomnia.
I would fall asleep with no problem but be wide awake by 1am, fall back asleep at 4.30/5am and my alarm goes off at half 6. My lowest point was going to work after just 1.5hr sleep. Now, if I wake up I'm usually just awake for around half an hour.

susiedaisy1912 · 19/02/2024 08:14

HRT and a good magnesium supplement is what has given me my sleep back.

Justtellingya · 19/02/2024 08:18

I'm the same OP. Have tried everything . GP smiles and nods. Tried Magnesium, melotinin, HRT etc He wont give me sleeping pills. Got sacked from work cos of it and feel awful.

MarnieMarnie · 19/02/2024 08:22

I had such bad perimenopausal insomnia that I was genuinely suicidal (and I generally have very robust MH). I started on oestrogel and utrogestan and within days I was sleeping again. If you're already on hrt you can try changing it or try melanin, which is meant to work (I haven't tried it myself)..

Mistymornin · 19/02/2024 08:23

Same here since menopause, my body clock is all over the place. I take the the herbal tablets which help knock me out for about 4 hours. I also listen to 'rain' on utube which helps.

Um, that would be unfair dismissal, surely?

For those who have taken magnesium make sure the dose is 320mg. Not too low a dose.
