What is the Tory plan for Britain?

I hear PM Sunak and other members of the government accusing Labour of "not having a plan". But I haven't heard what the Tory plan is yet beyond more cuts in services to fund tax cuts and the White Elephant that is Rwanda.

Do they have a Growth Plan and how do they intend to deliver it?

I think I saw something about stopping people under a certain age ever beginning to smoke and the age going up for legally buying cigarettes.

Then as an add on something about cutting back on vaping too

Bringing down inflation. I think that has finally begun to happen. It was at 11 now it's 4.

Rwanda won't ever happen because UK judges won't agree it's a safe country.

Bringing down legal migration eg a student was allowed to bring lots of dependents. That should never have been allowed in the first place. Migrants should have skills we as a country need.

I have read that labour are planning for a two term stint because everything is so bad it will take that long to get standards of living back to where they were.
I do wonder if there are elements of the Tory party who would be happy for labour to win this time as it’s such as mess it will be so painful to sort it out. Or there is a plan, like the Ridley plan in the 1979s the tories made before thatcher was elected, and it’s so unpalatable that it can’t be published. If it is this option I suspect it’s the deconstruction of the nhs and replace it with private healthcare. Although how anyone is going to be able to afford it is beyond me. As the cost of healthcare is not factored into people’s budgets as it is in other countries and there are many people without spare money. Also those with spare money would then be spending on healthcare not other goods and services so it could deepen the recession

The tories have always singled out the poor and disadvantaged. I'm old enough to remember when single mothers were blamed for the countries problems and this was amplified by the right wing press at the time.

Gosh ! yes I remember this , late 80s . Even Johnson wrote a piece about single mothers didn't he , think in the 90s .

I don't think there is much of a plan. I think they are tired and out of ideas.

Among those who do still have ideas and passions, there are too many splits/factions and too many contradictions.

It's hard to be the party of "economic growth/productivity" while also appealling to pensioners who want to block everything that might spoil the view from their village bungalow.

It's also hard to be the party of Thatcherism (small state, limited public spending/low taxation) while also trying to win votes among poor, socially conservative voters in Brexity parts of the country who basically want loads of public spending in their areas.

Watching the factions fight it out after the election will be interesting, at least.

hattie43 · 19/02/2024 06:17

I personally don't think it matters whose in government. Having just been abroad to a European city you can see how the UK is absolutely in the toilet .
I don't think either party has the money to make meaningful change . Nothing works .

We need a totally new party .

They have talked about reform of the benefits system to get more disabled people back to work and change the system of assessing for work capability/ removing some of the descriptors so essentially meaning more people will be found fit for work.

The only way more people will be fit for work is by investing in and reforming the NHS - I can’t see any plan for that.

It’s interesting how many of us can see the scorched earth policy so clearly. It’s totally despicable.

Canterbutytales · 19/02/2024 08:20

@hattie43 with the same type of career politicians like Farage and multimillionaires like Richard Tice ?
@VeniVidiWeeWee ooh you’ve persuaded me. I’ll vote Tory. Not.

Hereyoume · 19/02/2024 08:21

The Tory's have a plan?

Wait . . . . what?

VeniVidiWeeWee · 19/02/2024 01:15

And the Opposition has responded how?

Green investment?

Definition of a woman?

Anti-semitism?

Could you share the plans the Conservatives have regarding your list?

Normandy144 · 19/02/2024 08:46

The fact that so far over 50 current Tory MPs aren't contesting their seats at the next election (and we're still only in February) should tell you something.

bluelavender · 19/02/2024 10:30

It is a bit different though between the government and the opposition. The government is in power and doing things. They will have a budget next month setting out what they'll spend money on.

Lots of people might think that the current government has been in for too long, that they don;t like their performance and that its time for a change.

The problem is that Labour are not being clear about what that change is. The only policy that I know that they definitely want to bring in is VAT on private schools. I know that they wanted to spend money on green investment but have pulled back from this

Nearly 2 hours after I started this thread no one has come on to explain or even link to the 5 year Tory Plan for Britain and how they will execute and pay for it.

Do they not have one then?

No

DrunkenElephant · 19/02/2024 12:18

The best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour.

15 years and the country is on its arse. I can’t quite believe that people will vote for more of the same, but they will.

If I hear one more person say “but labour wouldn’t be any better” I will scream. Forget any other political party, it is the Tory’s that have been in power for 15 years. It has been their job, nobody else’s, to run the country.

They have halved their planned spend. The original figure was given in 2021, but in the current economic climate they have reconsidered and halved the original figure.

puncheur · 19/02/2024 12:23

They are in survival mode. The only plan they have is to try and get the party through the next 24 hours relatively crisis-free. Then repeat. They (and to be fair the opposition) have no plans to tackle the big issues of the era, such as:

  • The impact of pervasive AI and automation
  • The decline of liberal democracy and the West and the rise of autocracy and China
  • The inverted population pyramid
  • Global heating and habitat loss
  • The intersection of social media, post-truth politics, and societal polarisation
Menomeno · 19/02/2024 12:31

The Tories have always had a plan, and they’ve executed it perfectly. Asset-strip the country, break up the NHS and flog it off to private companies, shaft the vulnerable, poor, disabled, single-parents etc, all while lining their back pockets and those of their friends. Anyone who couldn’t see it back in 2010 was an idiot. Anyone who still can’t see it now are beyond all help.

CheshireCat1 · 19/02/2024 12:45

I would imagine that quite a few of them have a plan of how being an MP has increased their chances of making more money once they lose their seats in the next general election.
As for encouraging disabled back into work, well I’m not hopeful. I’m disabled myself, I still work but have had to reduce my hours because it was such a struggle to get into work and was having a detrimental effect on my health. I did apply for Access to Work but the process was an absolute nightmare so I just gave up on it because the process caused too much stress, which is the main reason that I don’t claim any disability benefits. Thankfully my employers are very supportive.

Does anyone really care about those questions though... honestly?

They all all dead cats.

I care about the ability to run this country in a fair and prosperous way, I care about correctly taxing the mega rich instead of making the mega poor subsidise them. I care about big corporations making unprecedented profit, then trying to pass the price rises off as 'cos of the war in Ukraine, etc.' I care about the shambles that is Brexit. I care about the mess the tories have made of the NHS in the hope of selling it off piecemeal to their mates.

I couldn't give a shit if a handful of politicians aren't fond of members of a particular religion, think men in dresses are women, or want to spend more/less on green initiatives.

We all have our own little personal prejudices and bias. Do you care if Sheila on the Asda checkout hates catholics? I couldn't give a shit as long as she scans my shopping in a safe and efficient manner.

Canterbutytales · 19/02/2024 13:01

Perplexed why people think labour have no plan. Like every GE they’ll publish a manifesto detailing their pledges. And if you visit their website there’s further info.
It’s becoming a bit of lazy trope that ‘Labour have no plans’. The tories have been in power 14 years and apart from Brexit what exactly have they done apart from tinkering at the edges.

newnamethanks · 19/02/2024 16:20

The Tories have a plan. The plan is to keep repeating 'Labour has no plan' in the hope that enough idiots will believe it. It worked well in 2019 "hate the EU". It might work again.

AdamRyan · 19/02/2024 16:24

This is a very quiet thread compared to the starmer one. Weird.
Maybe its because we all know the plan is to stick to the plan or we will be back to square one Confused

or is it we all know its to halve boats, grow inflation and stop the NHS or something? Oh hang on I missed two

What things are they doing though? And how do they tie together into a plan to drag the country out of the pile of shit they’ve dragged it into?
Labour are still planning to make large investment into green technology, just not as large as they wanted to before the aforementioned pile of shit got quite so deep.

Labour have outlined what they think is 8mportant very clearly. They just can’t cost it all up yet because, well, the Tories keep piling a bit more shit onto the country at every turn. Have a look here.
