Sorry for all the exclamation marks.

My daughter spilled a glass of water on her bedside table and cleaned it up herself. Unfortunately, the water had soaked into the fabric base on the bedside lamp stand and so the moisture has been trapped between the two surfaces. When cleaning her room today, i moved the lamp and there is now mould on the table.

We are not rich, and I saved hard to buy this matching furniture set for my daughter.

I don’t know a lot about furniture, well I know nothing really. It was from John Lewis a few years back. It doesn’t feel too much like wood to me, but it has a white high gloss finish.

Is there any way I can save this piece?

Thank you.

Can you post a photo

FlyingFishh · 18/02/2024 20:02

DD has just gone to bed. Once she’s asleep I’ll pop in and get a photo.

Have you tried wiping it off

Actually, scrap my original description… It’s not high gloss at all!! The fronts of the drawers are glossy, the surface on the top is a matte finish.

It doesn’t wipe off. It’s penetrated the white surface.

Have you tried diluted bleach or mould spray, is it a veneer top that can be replaced

FlyingFishh · 18/02/2024 20:36

I haven’t tried bleach or mould spray but will try that, thanks. I don’t think the top could be replaced, but DIY really isn’t my thing so maybe I’m wrong.

I think some of it would come off with mould spray, but that it will still be a bit discoloured/bumpy. You could clean the mould and then put the lamp back.

But if that's not what you want, all is not lost OP, even if it's veneer you could sand it down lightly and repaint with furniture paint.

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 18/02/2024 20:49

Bleach to kill the mould but it won't get rid of the discolouration.

Your options will be to sand and paint or use some of the vinyl self adhesive film to cover the top, either white Matt or you could choose something in a complementary colour and pattern to match other things in the room.

I agree with the others, bleach, sand it down and then use sticky back vinyl or similar over the top. Just cut it to size and stick it on.

Cheeesus · 18/02/2024 20:55

I would try mould remover spray

and if that didn’t work possibly paint it with this sort of thing.

Before you start sanding etc try a magic sponge. They are brilliant at getting stains out of light coloured surfaces: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sponges-Cleaning-Melamine-Bathroom-3-93x2-36x0-79in/dp/B0BX4BXXJ2/ref=sr_1_5?crid=AVIXO8AG7EKR&keywords=magic%2Bsponge&qid=1707582585&sprefix=magic%2Bsponge%2Caps%2C90&sr=8-5&th=1

I got mould like this off my white painted windowsill by scrubbing gently with some of the Pink Stuff paste.

AdoraBell · 18/02/2024 21:03

I was going to suggest sanding it and repainting if you couldn’t clear the mould with cleaning.

TraitorsGate · 18/02/2024 21:25

If its dri3d out you could send it down then put a pretty runner over it for now, you will need to remove the fabric lamp base too.

LambriniBobinIsleworth · 18/02/2024 21:46

Use a sponge or clean paintbrush to put a layer of thick bleach on it and leave for a couple of hours. Use a dry sponge to scrub it off. Repeat until the mould is gone. Then use an iron on low on top of a tea towel to dry out the moisture.

If it's still discoloured you may need to paint it. Perhaps with thin layer of a furniture spray paint.

magentacloud · 18/02/2024 22:02

Bleach doesn't kill mould. You need to wipe it with a cloth soaked in white vinegar and water, half and half of each will do. If you have any clove oil in the house add a drop to your vinegar and water mix. Leave it on for a bit, and rewipe.

Wickes, sell I think it's called H M mould remove spray, it's something like this name anyway. It will get it off. Just spray, leave 5 mins and then wipe off.

Yes it's HG this is the one I mean from Wickes. It works.

NewName24 · 18/02/2024 23:47

HG is good, but has a strong smell. You need to do this in a well ventilated area.

I'd take it out of her room (I'm presuming it isn't built in ?) If it were built in, I'd take dd out of her room that night.

Northernsouloldies · 19/02/2024 00:32

I second that if you use HG, we'll ventilated and don't get it on fabric or carpet. I've ruined a couple of tops with getting splashes on me.

Sparsely · 19/02/2024 00:38

You could get a bit of white glass (sandblasted at the edges) from a glass merchant and put it on top. I don't think it would cost much.
