Going on holiday to a villa with a pool with 11 month old

I’m going on holiday with my baby who will be 11.5 months old (she’s 8 months now) to a Villa that will have a pool with no gate!

Shes not crawling yet but could obviously be crawling and walking by the time of the holiday.

We will obviously be watching her like a hawk whilst we are there but on one of the days we have a wedding so will have a nanny for the day / night from around 4pm. I’m really worried!

Is the best thing to do to say keep inside with the doors locked? I was also thinking of buying a floatation vest to put on her each morning. She won’t understand what it is so won’t be giving her a false sense of security?

Is the nanny your own nanny from home that you are bringing on the trip with you? Or a local nanny at the holiday location?

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 18/02/2024 21:50

I would not leave your baby with an unknown nanny in circumstances where you are considering a flotation device because of an open pool.

Sorry, I know that is not what you want to hear.

Villa and open pool with you or DH in attendance at all times. Or villa without an open pool plus nanny for the day.

The chances of your baby coming to harm in the circumstances you describe are slight. But I would not even take the slight chance.

If you think everyone's being dramatic, it's actually illegal to let a villa with an unfenced pool in France as they've had so many children die.

Op why come on here looking for advice and then dismiss people's opinions as dramatic? So what if your dh grew up in Spain and had a swimming pool? He's one person. I used to live in a hot country and I heard of several stories of dcs drowning in pools. I would not rent a villa with a pool with small dcs unless there were safeguards such a fence and I certainly wouldn't leave my dc with a nanny in that situation. I have three (now grown up) dcs and I can tell you 'watching like a hawk' is not a good enough plan.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 19/02/2024 05:55

I've got a pool. It has a non-climbable fence with a self-closing gate and is checked by a pool inspector every few years to ensure it remains compliant with local safety laws. If we have kids visiting and using the pool I still insist on an adult in the pool with them at all times. There is no way I would hire a villa with an unfenced pool, and then trust an unknown nanny to look after my toddler! I just wouldn't be able to relax. Can't you re-book a more child friendly villa?

I actually think some replies are a bit dramatic. I’m not going to book somewhere else. I am OBVIOUSLY going to ask the nanny to stay inside and we’re also asking her to look after our baby for a day we are at the Villa to see how she is.

I was hoping for suggestions of floatation vests etc?

I'd not do the floatation vest as it will give everyone a false sense of security

Literally seconds for anyone to drown, the time someone will be in the toilet

Bit nosey 😂

WandaWonder · 19/02/2024 06:33

A floatation will not save them from drowning

Please tell me this thread is some weird reverse thing or whatever. Just mention to the nanny not to let them go outside unless they are with them

Getting dramatic is not going to keep them safer

amieloue · 19/02/2024 06:43

It won't be a holiday.

Don't leave your dd with a stranger. Even an experienced professional nanny.

Thank you - my OH grew up in Spain with a villa with a pool so some of the suggestions are really unhelpful! I think basically the answer is to watch her at all times which I knew anyway.

When I was a child seatbelts weren’t mandatory for anyone, never mind car seats, and it was normal to stick any extra passengers in the boot. Nobody I knew was killed in a car crash, but that doesn't mean it was safe.

Flotation devices are for supervised swimming. They aren’t designed to reliably keep your child’s face out of the water. You need something certified as a life jacket to do that, but I don’t know whether they are suitable for day long wear for a mobile child in a house.

If nothing else, I don’t think you will be ‘going on holiday’.
